Home defense hand gun?

I told my wife, if she should ever have to reach for a weapon, it should be the revolver. No worries about FTE or anything else, point and shoot. Caliber is .38.

I would probably reach for the same.

What I really recommend doing. Is not getting a gun at all for now. Their are classes that teach people how to shoot, safely manipulate the gun and teach basics. I think they are $150 a person. I took my girl they gave her a 22 pistol and she enjoyed it. What if you puechase a gun and she won't want to use it?

Be careful with getting a gun that is too light "because she is a woman". My wife picked up an S&W Airweight 38Spl snubby in the LGS and thought it was great due to the small size and light weight. She later had a chance to shoot one though and after 5 rounds put it down and told me, "she did NOT want that pistol!".

She also liked my Taurus 738 as well, for the same reasons, but after firing two rounds gave it back to me and asked for the 1911 again.

Rossi makes a nice 2 inch barreled, steel framed, full grip .357 revolver that would make a great nightstand gun. The weight will help tame recoil, especially if only firing 38Spl rounds and the full grip makes it easier to control then the smaller, concealment-type grips on most snubbies.

Home defense? Go for a shotgun.

If you get a revolver, do NOT get a tiny j-frame 5 shot. They are hard to shoot and are not fun to shoot.

Get a larger frame gun like a S&W 686 or a Ruger GP100

Most women like 1911's or other semi-autos. BUT sometimes they don't like operating the slide to chamber a round. Sometimes it can be very difficult if they have weak hands.

SO that leaves you with some options. You can forget semi's and go with a revolver (which I personally think is best for home defense regardless of sex), or you can find a semi auto she likes to shoot and always keep a round chambered. You will probably end up leaving a revolver loaded anyway, but this is a whole other issue weather or not to keep your gun loaded all the time.

Depending on how serious you are about home defense, you can either keep a network of guns in the home that can be accessed from every possible room, or you buy the one gun and always carry at home (this option is less risky).

OR you can buy the one gun and put it in a safe, and if you ever need it to protect your life, just ask your violent aggressor to wait until you retrieve it from the safe location.

I have no experience with these. I've seen them but have no idea how they shoot. They look interesting.

Not exactly quick to load but I like my single action revolver - its big and heavy, but I recon my 14yo could handle it (loaded with .38 not .357 ;-) looks mean too.
Cocking the hammer is much easier than racking the slide on a semi.

If she can handle a shotgun then go with a 590 or 870.

My M&P sits arms length from my bed for bumps in the night. My mom protects her house with an 870 it is sweet. My buddy has a 590 to hold down his ranch and that one is nice also.

The most important thing is training and choosing the most reliable weapon you can afford.
