Brother, a shotgun is not a handgun..

    Revolver's don't fail
It takes a lot of balls to play golf the way I do.

Do you own any handguns already? Do you have any experience with handguns/rifles/shotguns?

Probably the simplest gun to function would be a revolver. If a semi auto, simplest would be Glock or M&P. Most people that hate the feel of a Glock really like the feel of an M&P. If semi auto, stick with 9mm.

Get her a lesson and training somewhat regularly and self defense accuracy should be achieved with ease. If she doesn't get a lesson from someone who actually knows what they are doing, it is going to be a giant struggle to shoot well (and this usually leads to not wanting to handle the firearm as much).

Without knowing anything else, it's hard to recommend stuff. It's already hard to recommend stuff since she needs to be the one to go rent some handguns and see what she likes. But, check out a revolver in 38 special, a 9mm Glock, an M&P9/9c, Ruger SR9/9c. There's more, but those are the ones off the top of my head.

Edit: XD in 9mm too. Some people really seem to like them... I don't get it, but to each their own.

yup...I'd go revolver first. Easier to load and operate.

Some manufacturers, and I can't remember who off the top of my head, make revolvers geared toward women, i.e. a little lighter frame , pink grips (ugh), etc.

My 1st ex was actually pretty good with semi-automatics but she had had some experience with them before we met.

.38 revolver or 9mm semi-auto. Try both and let her choose.

Take her to a range, try out a few different models and calibers and let her decide

I told my wife, if she should ever have to reach for a weapon, it should be the revolver. No worries about FTE or anything else, point and shoot. Caliber is .38.

I would probably reach for the same.
