Single Gun, What do you choose?

DocFuhr and I are arguing over cocktails while we're purusing CalGuns.

He wants a single gun that is suitable for home defense and a SHTF scenario.
I claim the closest he can get is a rifled barrel shotgun, and that's at best marginal for both uses.
Handgun would be my secondary choice for both of these and rifle for home defense? Not good if you've got neighbors.
    Thoughts?

SKS. Intermediate range rifle. Reliable and ammo is cheap...for now. For SHTF scenarios.

    For home defense - shotgun.

if ar lowers count as one gun, then:
          -1 ar lower
-however many uppers to fill all the roles (kiss, tac, sdm, varmint, etc.)

but if only one than 1 16" m4 type build... short enough for around the house work, with enough distance out to 400-550 m/yds. load it up with your favorite home-defense loads (tap, rangers, etc.) and it should suffice for 95% of urban situations... more so than a handgun or a shotgun...

A hand gun is for you to fight your way to your shotgun and your shotgun is for you to fight your way to your rifle... That is the way I see it. As far as neighbors are concerned, when the SHTF I am not going to be worried about them.

You guys are missing the point.
The SHTF and Home Defense are intended for this discussion as separate and distinct purposes. Not SHTF and defending the home.

So the question remains, what 1 gun would you choose.

And no, multiple uppers don't count as one gun, but that's the closest to a good answer so far.
Like a 9mm upper for home defense and a .223/5.56 for SHTF?

An 18-24" barreled shotgun. period. 12ga, 3" chamber.

The options this gives you are incredible and wide.

There is no such thing as the perfect "single" gun, but I believe this is as close as it gets.

I would probably not go with a rifled barrel, and just use rifled slugs when slugs are needed.

A shotgun would be what I would choose if I had to. Buckshot and slugs grant great diversity.

But I do prefer pistol for home defense. I have too many tight corners and a narrow stairway. YMMV

                            AR15 with a MMG, either in .223 or 6.8mm.

Like many have said, until there is an AR-15 modular system that allows me to go from SMG to semi-auto trap gun in 2 seconds without spending $500 on an upper, there is never going to be a one-size-fits-all gun.

Definitely a Pump or semi-auto shotgun though.
