Why are 2 people needed to rent a gun at range?

I have noticed this rule at some ranges. Basically, if you don't own your own gun and want to rent one from the range, you must be in a party of 2 or more.

How come ranges dont rent out guns to solo shooters?

So that your friend can intervene if you decided to screw a round through your own melon.

Sometimes the law defends plunder and participates in it. Sometimes the law places the whole apparatus of judges, police, prisons and gendarmes at the service of the plunderers, and treats the victim -- when he defends himself -- as a criminal. Bastiat

few stories floating around about people going in to a range, renting a gun and buying one box of ammo, going out and killing themselves. i guess they figure if you're with someone else or brought your own firearms with you (my range), you're less likely to commit suicide.
      I don't own any guns...they're dangerous.

ive rented guns by myself before... i see the reason though

im guessing they let me rent anyway because they know me and pretty much can see i own "plenty of firearms"

Like the others said, it's for suicide prevention.

People typically don't commit suicide right in front of their friends/family.

Range I frequent will rent you a firearm if your solo and you've brought your own firearm as well. Otherwise it's a suicide prevention idea.

Yup- like they said... it does happen about once a year sometimes twice where someone commits suicide at a range.

Because they dont OWN a firearm, so they go to a range where they can rent one.

If you walk into a range, and ask to rent by yourself- They will - no problem IF YOU ALREADY walked in with your own guns... They aint worried about you... if you own guns and brought them in... why would you rent one and commit suicide there????

Oddly enough... was it 2 years ago???? Twins from Europe were visiting the US and went to a range in Colorado I think.... rented a 9mm handgun and tried to pull off a double suicide- through both heads with one shot... first one died at scene- second was wounded but I never heard if she recovered or not, or took some other action to successfully complete the attempt.

You can usually rent a gun by yourself if you also bring your own guns, shows that you don't "need" theirs if you want to commit suicide.

As I recall though there was a story a few months ago where a couple people rented a gun and one killed himself on purpose with it anyway. Scarring a friend for life is a messed up way to commit suicide.

If you own your own gun, then, if you are going to plug yourself, you will do it at home, or down by the lake, or some favorite place.
                    Not necessarily at the range.
I guess. I guess that is the theory.
I never heard, has anyone else heard of anyone who owns firearms plugging theyself at the range?
                    I don't think it's ever been done.

Yep... and if you bring a gun you're a good rental risk because you didn't need to rent one to shoot yourself...

There are some selfish people out there who have rented guns while alone and done stupid things that end up making the range shut down for hours to days and costs the range a lot in lost revenue, clean up and repairs. Besides, the selfish jerks never end up paying their range tabs either. So, it's a matter of sound business to have such a policy. It has nothing to do with suicide prevention.

I was at a range today and a guy who came in to look....then he asked to shoot and they asked him if he had his own handgun......when he said no they explained to him that as like most ranges it's policy, then explained that it was there policy because of insurance reasons
