Shotgun purchase help

I am purchasing a shotgun from a friend but he never did a ppt when he bought it. He purchased it from a friend of his and was told he didn't need to do a ppt due to it being a long gun. My question is should I ppt , can I ppt even if he is not the original owner or just buy it from him without any transfer paperwork dros ect... Shotgun is a newer winchester sxp. Thanks

Seller is NOT asked for proof he registered the weapon during a sale. YES you need to PPT and the only thing you have to worry about is getting your money back if the weapon turns up listed as stolen.

Legally you have to ppt it. The other way is a crime and is not recommended. The ppt also protects you just in case it's hot.
