Lessons Learned in the 2012 Gun Panic.

I used to be the guy who scoffed at people with large stockpiles of ammo.What precisely did they plan to do with the stuff,I thought.

Then December 2012 rolled around.Oh snap.I'd heard stories about 2008,but damn.I got caught with all of 100 rounds on hand.Lesson learned.

Secondary lesson:you'd better love every gun you own,because tomorrow you may not be able to get another one.Seeeing empty walls, inventory backlogs,and gasbags on TV discuss confiscation and permit taxes brought the lesson home.

What gems of wisdom have you all learned from that panic?

I feel like a 6 month stash, at a minimum, is what you should have in hand for the most common calibers.

A 6 month quantity will be different from Person A to Person B given how much they each shoot.

It gets a little more complicated/expensive of you shoot more than one caliber.

To back track, one year's worth of ammo would probably be optimal but that would cost a lot of $ plus the need to store. Since we're not all loaded w $, realistically, anywhere between 3-6 mos. makes sense to me.

Dont buy your first rifles an hour after Newtown. I was on my way to Ventura from Bakersfield to pick up a couple of Mosins because those were the last two Big 5 had. Reports of Newtown started while I was almost there. By the time I got someone to help me about 25 people flooded the store for rifles and ammo.

I've learned to be happy with the firearms I've acquired. not because i don't want more, but because I've learned to serve all my needs with what I have.

at least that's what I tell myself as I see the prices on all kinds of guns shoot up.

Also reloading is a necessity, casting boolits is too. stock up on powder and primers, perhaps brass, you can scrounge or cast projectiles.

i learned i can spend a great amount of money in a relatively short time,lol. i also learned the more ammo i hoard the more i feel it isnt enough.i also learned i was glad i started gathering up ammo in 2011. i also learned i can spend close to 4 grand on ammo at walmart in 12 mnths .

It is only a crisis if you do not plan ahead.
Has not effected me as I bought ammo and reloading supplies long ago since there would only be one way the price would go. I had the money then so I stocked up.
I also have not purchased any firearms at rape me prices. I have bought a couple at a price I would normally pay. I did sell some I bought long ago as extras(to sell later) to help fund my Africa trip.
Learned long ago to plan ahead and that prices will only increase. So buy when stuff is plentifull and lower cost. I still buy some reloading stuff but only if priced right.

Sorta worked out for me... I bough a higher end rifle than I'd have normally (since the cheap ones were all gone). The one I bought didn't really go up in price... now I am happy I have a nice one.

i sold guns i do not need to buy more ammo. ammo is everything to me right now. guns i used to want i will pass on now because i do not want to start hording a new caliber.

All that useless panicking did nothing but raise the price of everything. And what was the panic about? Nothing but pure assumptions. Gun owners are their own worst enemy.

I learned that a fool and his money are soon departed.

It was tempting to make some quick cash on selling magazine rebuilds or sell an AR, but I didn't.

My only "stupid" purchase was a BCG for my project that was 179.99, turns out I haven't finished the rifle and over spent by about 50 bucks.

I learned that there are more gun owners now than there ever was be for. And most of them got all the ammo they could with in that one year. I just buy around 200 a month in ammo and it piles up.

I learned to start stocking up on ammo now before 2016 election shortage starts!
