you're absolutely right. she could also buy a manual but if she doesn't know how to drive stick and gets on the highway...she gonna have a bad time.

its your friend. up to you. we can only suggest based on how you describe her anyway.
Oh trust me, I believe that .22 will kill you just as well as .45 or even 12 gauge.

But, reliability: there are a lot of duds with rimfire primers, and they are finicky with humidity. Plus, they jam a fair amount: those things are unacceptable in a self defense situation.
The only time I'd make an exception is with a .22 revolver, like the LCR-22.
If there's a dead primer, not a problem! Pull the trigger again.

She can handle most any firearm, for long periods of time... That's questionable. She got to shoot a G3, FAL, Mosin, 870, SXS, every ruskie handgun, an SKS, a 1911, AK's both 47 and 74, M1 Garand, and a lot more. She was proficient and accurate with almost all of them, so I know she can handle them. At this point, it's comfort.

She was fine with the recoil of the 12 actually, she's like maybe 10% of the women I've taken shooting: they love recoil

I told her, she's talking to her roommates (long time friends all going to college and renting a house) to figure out if they'd be cool with it and if they want to go shooting.

Yeah, not a fan of the either. go with the Enidine Shot Stock instead. Pricey, but well worth it if you plan to run a pistol grip/Ar style stock set up.

Edit* I could not get comfortable with the movement in the grip and tube area, it made me choke up on the grip which led to fatigue.
The ITT stock was actually on a freinds coworkers personal shotgun. She too is a small lady and hated shooting the SG. Only did
for quals and hated every second of it. One of the RO's hooked her up with a ITT shot buffer and ergo grip, boy that gun is a
dream to shoot now, even with 1 ounce slugs.

Germz the only reason i would not use a 22lr for defence? Is that rimfire ammo is not the best quality. I have had boxes of Blazer that half wouldn't ignite. Centerfire ammo has a much better track record. Oh and the idea have having to shoot someone numerous times (threat ended) doesn't appeal to me.

LCR-22 is nice; 8 shots and recoil is obviously controllable. now just have her dad make that "not-a-straw-purchase" for her.

never shot a maverick, but I'd bet she'd like an ithica 37.

I've shot a maverick, two actually. Both were very solid.

Yeah, she might go for a .38 if she gets a handgun; she seemed to love my S&W 64-5, that's for sure. Shot like 100 rounds out of it, it was properly leaded before I cleaned it!

It directs all the recoil from the cheek weld straight up into your face (assuming you're actually attaining a sight alignment/sight picture)

also causes the platform to oscillate and "fishtail" in the grip, instead of an elastic impact into your shoulder.

Wow, this thread is really all over the place. Having had recent experience with buying a shotgun for HD and practicing with it on clays, I've gone through some of the issues raised so far.

First, I learned that a Remington 870 with mag extension and 28" barrel is pretty darn heavy. Somewhere after 2 rounds of trap/skeet, I start trembling at high ready with my arms extended. Rather than looking at overall weight, I think balance is more important. Shotguns are long weapons and having to hold the weight with my arms extended really became uncomfortable. I'd emphasize a short stock and lightweight barrel. An 870 with light contour barrel and standard mag tube was world's different in weight and feel.

I also had a Knoxx Specops Gen 2 stock which worked as advertised. I didn't have a problem with cheek slap as long as I didn't lean my face forward into the stock. Recoil was very tame but the stock adds weight compared to the factory Remington stock. It's a good tactical stock, but I decided to do without the pistol grip for trap/skeet.

If she has trouble shooting an AK, a shotty is bigger and has more recoil.

Check out the youth size 20 and 12 gauge mossberg 500's. I tried out my buddie's sons 20 gauge and it was really light and seemed well built. His son stepped up to a 12 gauge this year so he gave the 20 gauge to my son. He can't shoot it yet but he is ready.

I thought a Knoxx stock would be the solution as well for my wife (4'10"/95lbs) until I fired one. DON"T do it! That thing punches you in the face with each shot as it moves up and back at the same time. If there was any reduction in recoil it was MORE then offset by the punch to the face.

Since your friend is so small you NEED to look at youth models or something with an adjustable stock.

For my wife we ended up with a Keltec SU16CA (4.1lbs empty) with their add-on pistol grip/adjustable stock package and a 10/22 with Blackhawk adjustable stock, along with an Escort youth model 20G semi-auto and Mossberg youth model .410 pump. Pistols are a Para Carry 9 and a Ruger SR22 (dropped off roster now though).

Cheaper pistol would be a Ruger LC9 but be careful of going too light on the pistol. My wife really liked the Airweight S&W 38Spl in the store due to it's light weight but after firing one she emphatically stated not for her. She had a similar reaction to my Taurus 738 (semi-auto .380), liked the size/weight but fired two rounds and asked for the 1911 back.

I've got a friend. I took her shooting, and she loved at as almost all people do.
Anyway, she's looking for her first firearm. She's 19, so handguns are technically doable, but since she can't CCW there's no real reason to get one right now.

Here's the problem though: she's 100 pounds soaking wet. Absolutely tiny. Cute, but tiny. When she was shooting an AK I had to hold the barrel up for her

She likes shotguns, so that brings me to a predicament: what would be a good, lightweight shotgun for her? I'm thinking something with an aluminum receiver of some sort, but what out there is inexpensive and has that?
                                Maybe a Maverick 88? That's still 7 pounds though.

But if you guys can also think of a rifle that's reasonably priced (she's in college, do the math), I'd want to suggest that as well.

Heck, if you can think of an inexpensive handgun, suggest that too since she could still legally get that.

Really, I guess what I'm trying to say is bring some suggestions!
Tell her to start a CG profile and start posting so we can troll and leg hump....
