    I'm in Newark CA.

    So many options here.

The cost of the S&W is really enticing and makes me wonder if it is worth it price wise to build the .22. On the other hand it could be so much fun.

One question in the OP that remains unanswered is whether or not the cost of uppers have risen in the past couple of years or is this pretty much par?

Uppers have been pretty stable, but it can be more cost effective if you build one up from scratch. I bought a complete upper, then decided to "upgrade" a bunch of things. Could have built it from scratch for less...

Palmetto rifle kit=$515 shipped to your door

Lower bought at local gun shop should cost less than $200 total.

        1st time assembling a lower= maybe 1 1/2 hours at most

Complete gun around $700 plus you know how the lower parts work because you assembled them yourself! Can't do much better than that.
You may not like guns, and choose not to own one. That is your right. You might not believe in God. That is your choice. However, if someone breaks into your home, the first two things you're going to do are, 1) Call someone with a gun, 2) Pray they get there in time.

Thanks all for your help. Here's what I 'think' I'm going to do -

          1. My local LGS says they keep getting the Smith & Wesson M&P15-22 in stock for around $450. I'm going to hold out for that as my .22
          2. I'm going to shop around in my local LGSs and pick up a stripped lower and then go from there for a .223

It may take me some time, but I'll get there.

          Thanks again.

Get a Marlin 795.....that's a lot of cash for a 22. my Marlin is great and its super accurate. Also less than $200.00 clams.

I jailed the Smith & Wesson 15-22 yesterday. Pick it up a week from Friday. I paid $552 OTD for it in Mountain View.

Any recommendations for a scope on it? Right now I'm not planning on spending more than $50 on it. Also will I need to get risers for a scope?

Haha i just read this thread and i am doing the exact. same. thing. I jailed my S & W m & p 15-22 for my birthday present to myself last week (consider yourself lucky i payed 613 i know it was abit much for the gun but i didn't want to wait any longer and to get it and i called everywhere around me the only place that had one and it was the only one and they actually put it on hold for me.) and with all the new law talk i am going to buy a striped lower or maybe a completed lower CMMG .something higher quality as it may be one of the only .223's i ever get to get. As for scope i am looking aswell for something good but spending 50$ on a great scope is unreal as i understand it. 300-400$ is about the sweet spot as i understand it , so i will be waiting on it until after my .223 lower as it will not be prohibited.

You should be in a rush.

Not sure about a $50 scope but NC Star makes decent ones for $100 or so.

I think you did well going with a dedicated .22LR AR-style rifle.

Good luck with the .223 build. It is fun and frustrating at the same time, lol. Just did that recently

Mine was a b'day present too. My b'day was yesterday (9/11 - So I sure as hell won't forget!!!).

How come yours cost you $613? Was it the camo or performance version? Mine was the SKU# 811062.

So whats the deal with the new proposed law on the ARs?
If I buy a lower now, does it mean if they do go through with the law all I have to do is register it?
Can't they still retroactively ban it?

Naw it wasn't just threaded barrel and collapsible stock , it was more expensive just because the shop i bought it from marked it up.

And as i still understand it we are not 100% sure with all the laws are not completely set in stone and can still be amended to say different things BUT as i interpret so far and have read of others , buy what you can now because after December 31 2013 you can no longer buy anything that will be banned which is quite a bit of stuff but actual registration won't be needed until July 2015. So if you buy a lower or two and you cannot just register a lower but need a full rifle you still have time (which isn't quite likely since the rest isn't regulated) to build it up. As to retroactively i am not sure at all but i doubt it since that would require them to target out specific gun groups like Ruger , S&W , ...etc that they believe shouldn't be had at all which they don't have the authority to do.
And on my last note call the Gov , email , write him we have until October 13th to make our voices heard and hopefully kill these bills where they stand.
