    Newbie - AR advice requested

    Hello all,

Newbie to guns and Calguns here. Would appreciate any advice you guys can give me.

I'm thinking of ordering 2 of the item below with the intention of making one a .223 AR and the other a .22 AR. Is that possible? Is this the right approach (apart from building the lowers myself).

How much would an upper for the .223 or the .22 cost? Is there any particular place or website that I should look for? (low-med budget).

I'm not in a rush so I could buy the lowers and wait for a good price if you think upper prices are going to come down.

Sorry bout the number of questions above. Again, thanks for any help you can give me.

Why not just build the .223 and then get the .22 conversion kit? Or is the whole idea to have 2 separate rifles? Also, looking at the web site you listed, it looks like they're on back order. Personally, I would want to find someone who has them in stock ready to ship rather than wait for a back order especially with all the horror stories lately about back ordered items.

You can get an decent complete upper for $4-500 all the way to $1500+. Last I checked a .22 conversion kit was around $2-300. It all depends on what you want. For starters, try Brownells, or MidwayUSA. You won't find a whole lot in stock, but it will give you an idea of what's available.

This is probably the best deal going right now for a .223/5.56...http://palmettostatearmory.com/index...-kit-2649.html

Then order an Anderson lower from karrisguns.com...http://www.karrisguns.com/ar-15-lower-receivers
You may not like guns, and choose not to own one. That is your right. You might not believe in God. That is your choice. However, if someone breaks into your home, the first two things you're going to do are, 1) Call someone with a gun, 2) Pray they get there in time.

Joebobsoutfitters is awesome. However, keep in mind that if you do find an oll online, you will be forced to pay tax and transfer fees at your ffl. I'd reccomend finding a lower at an LGS, and then buying all your LPK and other parts from a place like joebobs or palmetto. Just my .02

Find a new or used Colt 6920 complete rifle - .223 done

          S&W M&P 15-22 - .22 done

I've built a few rifles, I wish I would have gone ^ that route.

Building them is definitely doable, but just time consuming, and...Dah!

          Just my opinion though!

          Thanks,

          Anthony

            That's a good point.

I might check out J&R in Livermore or metal dog in SJ.

I also like the idea of buying 1 lower, 1 .223 upper and a .22 conversion kit. If I were to do this I have two questions -

            1. How much would all of the above come to - approximately of course?
            2. Is it easy at the range to swap the 2 calibers between each other?

Again, thanks a lot guys. I really appreciate the help.

              2. Is it easy at the range to swap the 2 calibers between each other? 30 seconds...just swap BCG and mag. Some kits also come with a different charging handle.

Again, thanks a lot guys. I really appreciate the help.

You can have the Palmetto State Armory kit sent right to your door, no FFL so it's up to you if you feel the need to report the use tax. Karri's Guns has the Anderson lowers for 65+ shipping tax isn't bad on a 65 purchase. You do need to go through an FFL so figure transfer and dros there.

Is it really that convenient to swap in the .22 conversion kit at the range? You'd have to re-zero your sights every time. I'd agree with the recommendation of a separate .22 rifle. If you must have an AR style .22, then Smith & Wesson M&P15-22 for about $500.

Dedicated 22 upper with its 22lr barrel is more accurate than a conversion using a 223 barrel.

I'm not going to mince words here. That's a sh*t lower.
And then it's polymer to boot.

Save some more money and buy/build a quality forged lower.
Or save a little more and buy a quality used rifle.

                      You won't regret it.

The Anderson lowers are aluminum. He could also check out the spikes lowers for 94. There are only so many companies that make lowers and some of these so called sh*t companies make lowers for the big name companies. Areo makes spikes JD Mching makes receivers for several companies.

^^^This. Easier to buy a 5.56/.223 and build/buy a .22 upper. Then once you've sighted them in, just swap the upper.

                          Or, build up both!

Your sights stay on the upper. 2 uppers = 2 sets of sights. No need to re-zero if all you are doing is swapping uppers on a single lower.

Where are you located? My LGS has those complete lowers in stock here in Turlock for $149
