My Kimber runs flawless. As long as I do a quick clean up around the chamber /extractor every 500rnds from using off the shelf range loads (some brands are alot dirtier then others) my gun it runs flawless.

I know Kimber used to have issues years ago when they were using an external extractor, but they switched to internal and the problems are gone, that whole ordeal has cursed thier name as still today.

Luckily I can say my Kimber runs excellent for a $700 1911

"Extractor" caused their image problem??? Which part of my non-parallel frame rails, the visibly defective grips or the issue with the thumb safety would you say was caused by the extractor style?

The "issues" at Kimber go well beyond a simple choice of extractor design and include sloppy (or non-existent) QC as well as a superiority complex from h3II that has them treating customers with valid complaints as somehow beneath their notice. I was actually told by the head of their custom shop that, "I wasn't qualified to tell them there was a problem with my pistol".

Of course there were the Kimber fanboys who ALL told me my complaint wasn't valid since I hadn't yet put 500rds through the pistol. This despite the fact my stated issue was that the slide/frame fit was TOO loose and I don't think anyone in the history of 1911s has ever shot-a-gun-tighter.

Strange that you state "luckily my Kimber runs excellent". $A $700 1911 SHOULD run excellent. The bugs have long been worked out of the well proven 100yo design.

My Rock Island Tactical runs just as well as my buddies Kimber Custom II all day long at the range. I can shoot one hole groups with both (as long as I do my part) but my Rock cost me a third less ($500) then what the Kimber cost him ($750). Armscorp also provides GREAT service without any kind of attitude.

As I said, anyone looking to buy a Kimber would do well to goggle them up first.

I am open to suggestions as to another, more reliable, Ca approved brand. Im looking for a light weight 1911 with a 4" to 4.5" barrel, night sights, full length grip for 7 to 8 round cap. I want a bobtail frame and a carry melt all in a flat black finish. I have an opportunity to buy a used (250 rounds) Kimber Pro CDP II for $975. I figure I can have the frame bobtailed, action tune and refinish the whole gun for about $400. I'd be in it for a total of about $1400.
If you want inexpensive and aluminum frame then I believe your only option beside Kimber is a Springfield Armory.

I almost bought a kimber but all the shops that I went to told me that they wouldn't recommend a kimber to anyone. That's like 5-6 shops and they all said the same. I ended up buying a trp instead since they all recommended springfield and have nothing but praises regarding their customer service.
