Turners or Bain & Davis?

I've bought four guns from Turner's Norwalk/ W.Covina with no issues. I have heard some interesting "advice" from some of the counter folks, but some of them are great. Know what you want, what it's worth, what it comes with, and inpect it well before you take delivery and you'll be fine.

When I was living and going to school in SoCal I went to both Turners and Bain and Davis.

My experience at Turners was mixed. Sometimes good. Sometimes 'blah', average. Sometimes bad. It really all depends who you get.

My experience at Bain and Davis was very good. I consigned a gun with them. Also, they seemed easy to talk to/deal with. And, Glock 30, quoted below, has a good point. It's nice to buy from a place that can offer you a little support if something goes wrong. Based on my experience at Bain I would guess that they seem like the type of guys that would work with you if there was a problem.

Another shop to consider is Ade's down in Orange County. I was never there (didn't know about it). But, Ade seems to have a great reputation here among Calgunners. It might be worth a drive.

Also, are you planning to buy the 590 retail or over the internet and then transfer? It might be worth your while financially to look into the latter option. You could find out from people here which FFLs around you have decent rates for internet transfers.

Big 5 will most likely have the lowest price on a 590. Turners will most likely have the rudest service with Big 5 not far behind.

I have use Turner’s in Redondo Beach for years and the guys there are great, they are educated and are all members of this site.

Screw turners. I bet those guys wont lift a finger after the sale if you need help. The only thing I got from turners is my deer tag. only reason i went there was because wally world didnt have any. otherwise i dont shop turners. i got mad at their crappy CS so i refuse to put a dime in their pocket.

I haven't been to Bain and Davis since I was a child going with my dad. I HAVE been to MANY Turners, I'd choose Bain and Davis hands down.

+1 Bain and Davis. That or just buy when on sale at Big 5. Oh i posted this on THR. here is or was my last experience in Turners in Reseda, San Fernando valley.

I was near a Turners outdoorsman the other day. So i went in see if i could get some supplies. First asked if they had .44 cal Wads. Guy at the counter looked puzzled i said Black powder. He said no. Then i went up to the counter got some primers. Then asked for # 10 and #11 CCI. The guy again looked really puzzled. So i said #10 and #11 are caps for black powder. He then said no we actually dont carry anything for black powder.

Then i could not help myself. So i said ok forget black powder. I then asked if he had a bottle of 777 gun powder. He then said let me check. I quickly then went over to the bullet section. Found some hornady .454 round balls. Took them to the counter. He then came out with the bottle of 777. Set it on the counter asked if i needed anything else. I turned the bottle around showed him where it said BLACK POWDER SUBSTITUTE. I then handed him the .454 roundballs and said you might want to send these back if you dont carry black powder. By the way the shelf is full of them. One of the other guys at the counter started laughing at him as he sat there with a red face. I then said Ok i guess i have to go to a real gun shop then. BYE

2nd problem I went in to BUY a 92FS, they would not let me disassemble it to check a few things. I ended up buying it from another store that did the saem day. VERY RUDE.

Only thing I could say here, in knowing that you are in Los Angeles, is that Los Angeles city has an ordinance that handguns can not be diassembled by the customer before the sale. What the logic is in that I have no idea but you can bet it was thunk up by someone on city council that hasn't a clue about firearms (someone like Jack Weiss or ex-councilmember Mike Feuer). This would only apply in the Reseda store, so if you weren't at that location, then yes, that was very rude.

6. Try to deal with the same guy each and every time.
   
7. Don't ask questions. (It's on this list twice for a reason).

Shouldn't those "rules" be true for anywhere?

Always best to deal with the same person, anywhere.
Of course all your paper work should be up to date and in order.
Ordering a gun from anywhere, is almost always a suck fest. People want to sell what they have.
I will confirm the wait for sale, their sale prices can rock on some items.

In this modern day of the internet and message boards, the last person you should be asking advice for when buying an item, is the guy your buying from. That and the fact that there is no reason to be going in uniformed, if you see it and must have it, go home and research it, don't impulse buy!!

IIRC it was the FV store. But WTF, really? I don't buy guns in LA city anyway, but that's bizarre. I would NEVER buy a used gun without breaking it down.

I have bought a gun and done a PPT at Turners Pasadena.
I told them who I was and several of them knew me from Calguns.
The manager even knew me.
Needless to say, I was well taken care of.
One PPT at Reseda as well without problems but they were not as friendly.
Bain and Davis is a shop with some history going back quite a ways.
Support the old shops if you can so we don't lose more of them.
