    FOID Card......seriously

Do you really have to have one of these to buy ammo in Illinois?

I was at a gun store there not long ago. Once the guy new I was from CA (or not IL), he refused to let me touch a gun. Only my cousin could handle anything. And yes, each customer slapped down a FOID card before the service rep would budge.

If the bills heading to Sacramento passes, we'll need one too.

Well Chicago determines the state of affairs in Illinois. To sum it up nicely the rest of Illinois hates the Democrats up in Chicago. One Illinois Republican Senator--Mark Kirk, I believe--even mentioned that Chicago should be a separate state.

By the letter of the law, if you have a hunting permit in Illinois, no, you do not need a FOID to buy ammo. That being said, with retailers being hypersensitive to the normal Illinois politics, you will most likely end up needing one, or somebody with one, to buy ammo.

Illinois is a nightmare. When I lived there I was very new to gun laws. I lived way west of Chicago and usually shot in Ottawa, IL. One day I decided to drive way out to the northern suburbs to check out a new range. Little did I know that I drove through 2 cities that had bans on the guns I was transporting. I could have lost my gun rights if I got stopped.

Welcome to the Game Show called "Owning a Gun in Illinois!"

                  Here's the rules:

You can't touch a gun, ammunition, or both without a state issued FOID.Period.

Transportation of a firearm , depending on its storage state, can be a crime depending on your transportation route. See each city and town can enact their own enforceable firearm codes, which is a problem when your gun range isn't in the same city you actually live in.

For example;take three suburban cities in Illinois which have mutually conflicting laws on firearm storage. City A says a gun must be stored with a lock on the trigger or the action. City B says a firearm must be stored with a lock on the outside of the case.City C says a handgun must have a local permit to be legal. The FOPA is only asserted as an affirmative defense AFTER arrest, so if you get stopped in the wrong city on the way to the range....you win the grand prize of jail time!

BS. I've held guns including a PS90 in IL as recently as 2012. I've also bought ammo with my out of state license. No FOID.

At least IL has the ATM or clip board option. For traffic violations you can have an officer follow you to an ATM and "pay" the ticket in advance. If you are stopped in Chicago you have a choice of either getting a ticket or getting the ticket book slammed into your head. I chose the book once before I knew they used the edge and not the flat part. After that I took the ticket every time.

                        ........because you're a non resident.

Try legally buying ammo as an IL resident without a FOID.

You made no resident requirements in your sweeping declaration. Hence you got the flag.

But I agree, the FOID is horrible law. That said, (most) IL residents don't have the AWB and standard capacity magazines are legal (for now). CA is worse in many ways.

Seriously? How can that be legal? Sounds like they are more f'd up than California, at least here we know were screwed no matter what city or town were in.
