The man can't initiate or declare new laws on his own. He can only decline to veto whatever anti-gun legislation Congress might pass.
In which case, there would be a lot more Reps and Senators who were much more responsible and guilty than him for getting that anti-gun law(s) passed.

And yeah, there's the argument that the Prez is responsible for POSSIBLY (with no guarantee of it actually happening) appointing new members to the Supreme Court, that argument is COMPLETELY IRRELEVANT TO ALL CALIFORNIA VOTERS.

This state's entire allocation of electoral votes has gone to the Democratic candidate for the last 4 presidential elections, and there's been no change in demographics to indicate that's gonna change this time around. If anything, it's gone more to the left, with the anti-war sentiment that Bush has created.

Voting for McCain, voting for Ron Paul, voting for anybody other than Obama -- it doesn't matter in this state. Obama cleans up in CA no matter WHAT you do. That's why arguments about gun issues (as they relate to the prez) and supreme court appointees, and telling people they should vote for McCain in CA, it's all pointless, imo.

It's up to the rest of the country to keep him out of office.
I agree Obama will most likely carry CA and the rest of the country must step up. But I disagree that his election will have little or no effect on us in CA and I would add, just because that may be true we should still very much want him to not be in the White House.

Think of what might happen in Heller if Al Gore had put the past 2 judges on the Supreme Court. Since we don't know what the effect of Heller may be in CA (and any future cases based on Heller) I think it's presumptuous to think Heller can have no effect. And although a fairly conservative Congress may impede his anti - gun initiatives, think of who he can appoint to run the various agencies that can make life tough for us. Maybe no more C & R FFLs, an even more aggressive ATF, OSHA all over us, an anti gun AG and even restrictions through USPS.

So it's not only the Chief Executive himself, but the folks he brings with him that we must be cause for great concern.

I'm having enough trouble imagining the liberals Obama might consider for open seats, let alone try to go back that far and play "what if" with Gore! I'm having an even more difficult time than that thinking about the quick and tidy confirmations Obama's people would breeze through considering who's in Congress right now (and who else might be added in Nov).

Hey, that could be a thread of it's own! Who would Obama appoint to cabinet and agency head positions? I'll start

          SCOTUS Justice - Diane Feinstein

Sec of Defense - Jimmy Carter

Director of BATFE - Sara Brady
"Did I say "republic?" By God, yes, I said "republic!" Long live the glorious republic of the United States of America. Damn democracy. It is a fraudulent term used, often by ignorant persons but no less often by intellectual fakers, to describe an infamous mixture of socialism, miscegenation, graft, confiscation of property and denial of personal rights to individuals whose virtuous principles make them offensive." - Westbrook Pegler

Thanks for that. I have to get up early in the morning and now something tells me I won't be sleeping very well. Blah.

If he is elected, in his first term alone he will be able to place 2 supreme court justices. If he lays low for the first term and then gets reelected he will have a shot at more justices and then he can really bring the hammer down on us.
