Many of these mag type conversions were done years ago, some with welded receivers. This rifle is just another version of one

The mag conversion, maybe. That gas system is suspect though.

I remember someone here on Calguns posting about his M1 that was similarly converted to .308 by a gun smith. Apparently, this is commercially available, but expensive.

I seem to recall a few years back that SA itself was offering Garands in .308 with a box mag conversion. Not that many years, either - like, literally, just a few.

Not necessarily true. The stock seems to have been wholly unmodified.
