Amen brother. I use a laptop computer bag for my pistol. The bag has places for targets, screw drivers, scope, etc. Very handy. For rifles, a soft bag works fine. I have heavy hard cases but they are VERY heavy and I only use them if the guns are going to be thrown around by some monkey or one of my buddies (same thing).

Pelican 1750 I got for a song off a fellow Calgunner. I think it weighs three times more than the M1A I put inside of it. It's got wheels on the bottom but that's about as cool as using the carrying handle on an AR. I got my eye out for one of those M1950 Parachutist weapons cases next.

I thought everyone carry their guns in guitar or violin cases?

I am big fan of SKB cases

I like that they are the egg crate foam and are not limited to a specifically cut out gun

I like my SKB scoped rifle case too. I only use it when travling though. I have canvas duck soft cases from Cabela's that I use for range trips with the long guns. I also have an SKB canvas duck soft pistol case that I really like.

Plano GunVaults (plastic with foam insert) for scoped rifles, Bulldog soft cases for AR.

I stick them in my range bag with one of those nice combination cable locks the feds use. They're more expensive than regular ones, but they seem far more sturdy and I don't have to worry about keys.

Jeff's Outfitters opened after Cape Outfitters was closed because the owner had passed away. I have heard that the owner of Jeff's worked for Cape. Cape is where I bought the case for my Beretta O/U.
These cases are a little pricey, but man are they pretty.

I used Pelican hard cases for a long time, but have transitioned to soft rifle cases. For travel, I'd consider another 1700.

I use soft cases for the rifles. The tactical shooting mat/case from NCStar is pretty decent. It's nice to just unzip it, fold it out on the ground and start shooting. For traveling where the rifles are likely to be bumped around or get wet, I have a large Storm case without the foam that I can just dump the rifle and soft case inside of.

                                Pelican 1750 ftw

IMO, there's too much risk of damage with a soft case. Between sliding around in my trunk, possibly bumping into things or having other goofballs bumping into me, I feel much better keeping my stuff properly secure. Yes, it's a heavy case, but it also comfortably holds two scoped rifles with bipods, two pistols and a cleaning kit. Then I use an ammo can for ammo/magazines and I'm set. Easy to carry, totally protected.
My life may not be worth the mere firearms, but should it ever really come down to it, my life is worth the freedom. The only reason you and I have the freedom we have is because someone else put their life on the line, knowing that it's not just about the guns.
No one is free until everyone is free. If you champion your own rights, but won't stand up for the rights of others, you're no better than those who wish to take our rights away.
