Wow Rust on all my guns -__-

I made this mistake once with a shotgun in a regular foam gun case for about two weeks. the rust I got was waaaaaay less than what you have, just a few spots of surface rust. I just put some Hoppes Elite gun oil on it and gently worked at the rust with an old wire barrel brush, then cleaned off the gunk with an oiled rag and checked for more rust. Got rid of it in less than 10 minutes and no "pock marks", pitting or scratches showed up. It looked just as it did before the rust. If I had to estimate, the intensity of my rust was about equivalent to what is on the portion of the barrel between the two attachment points of the front sight.

As far as storage goes, I would think you could stick the guns in an oiled "gun sock" and then put them in the foam case. I can't vouch for the validity of this because I have a safe, but I believe that was the intended purpose of gun socks right? Best bet is obviously to get a safe, but in the meantime I think that would work.

Do you leave it open (no container or case) in the gun safe?

That's what I do. Guns oiled properly and placed inside safe. Safe has a dehumidifier and a couple silica packs.

I previously kept my 870 in a shotgun bag and after a few months, it had very light rust on it. Haven't put it back in that case ever since.

I never had a issue with this amount of rust, i usually wipe it down with frog lube. But I didn't I guess i learned my lesson.

No. The best storage is with air circulation, a dry environment and a steady temperature. Anything that is less than that is not ideal.

i bought those single handgun cases from big 5. One type is Brown suede outside with wool (I think) and the other type nylon with a thin foam liner on the inside.

Is thus safe to store hand guns in?

I have the suede/wool type for a couple hand guns. No issues, but the wool on mine are sprayed (lightly soaked?) with Tri-Flow. Been like that since the 80's.

Odd, before I purchased a Stack on 8 gun cabinet recently Ive always stored my remington 870 and 1964 Marlin .22 in a foam padded double gun (2 sides) hard case and have never had a rust issue, even without a desiccant!

It's not that using cases is a guarantee of rust. It depends entirely on environmental conditions, and how much oil is involved. High humidity and then a drop in temp, guess what that moisture is going to condense on? The gun inside the case. How absorbent the material is can also make a difference. Sure, lots of people can get away with it for extended periods of time, but if it ever does end up rusting in the case... that's the reason.

As far as gun socks, a well oiled gun stock with a well oiled gun in it, in a safe with some sort of dehumidifier/dessicant will keep that gun from getting dinged up(or it from dinging up other guns) if things get bumped around.

Some guns come in foam cases from the factory, but you'll also note that they're coated in packing oil/grease.

So I decided to play around with my AR15 and 1911. Just to clean and inspect. I haven't been out shooting in a few months, due to the whole ammo situation. Well I clean my guns after every range trip. a few weeks ago, i cleaned and inspected my guns, just to get it ready for another range trip next month. When I went for my guns, they all had surface rust and flash rust... I don't know what caused it, so what can I do to clean it all up? Is there a place I can go to get it re-coated in orange county ca? I threw some frog lube on it, hoping to whipe it all away...

Dude, Kroil and steel wool. Spray the kroil on there and let it soak in for an hour, that rust will come off with light scrubbing. After that coat with oil. Frog Lube is the latest and greatest right? Well I'll take tried and true over the latest and greatest any day.
