.223 ammo question

What county are you in? You can use that ammo at Sacramento Valley Shooting Center on the public ranges.

I spend a lot of time out in BLM land... but just because you are unlikely to be policed in BLM doesn’t mean shooting steel core ammo is allowed... but I know many do anyways. Hopefully they are not shooting at steel and staying away from brush areas…

At least in the jurisdiction where I shoot its prohibited.

Personally I don’t want to be the guy out there that accidently caused a fire… even sneaking ammo into ranges where not allowed is just being irresponsible and causes risk to other shooters and the range.

AFAIK Tulammo has a bimetal (copper over steel) jacket, the core is lead.

I am in San Diego county. I don’t visit that range but I do to South Bay Rod and Gun, and there are no ammo restrictions at that range.

You are correct, the Wolf/Tula is bimetal, copper over steel with a lead core.

I don’t even shoot that stuff… I reload all my ammo… brass cases copper jacketed lead bullets. No problems for me.

Yeah sucks too be you. All three of the ranges I go to only have issues with Penetrators or incendiaries which are illegal anyway .

Depends on the range. There are plenty that will let you shoot Tula. Main reason why most ranges don't like them because you have to run a magnet to sort it out from the brass.

You won't find factory new brass ammo for the price of Tula, but you can find PMC, Independence, American Eagle for $9-$10 a box if you look around.

Fire hazard is what I am told. Steel sparking on rocks and the dry hills out here.

The magnet test is for the projectile only, not the case. The work around is to bring in your non-magnetic ammo to show them, then on the range, use your Tula or whatever. Just be discreet if any of the guys come around and if you're going to shoot a lot, police your casings often.
The two indoor ranges in FresYes are super strict about Tula etc. and those rules are not to be messed with for real safety issues.
Sorry for suggesting ignoring a rule, but the FRPC is a whole different deal being outside with a dirt berm. Weeds are a non-issue at FRPC, they do a great job of keeping it cleaned up. Just my opinion.

I shoot at Fresno Rifle and Pistol as well. No steel, don't even go out there with it. If they catch you on the range you'll be banned.
Very fire prone area.
Federal and Remington are the easiest to find and pass the test. Keep a magnet with your stuff. Check everything before you go. This range checks everything in the door and the Range master walks the Firing Line.

Might be. Burro Canyon Shooting Park is the only range I've been to, but they've always checked my ammo. They didn't check every round/box individually though. I'm not advocating for it, but if you REALLY wanted to you could sneak some in.

Burro started doing this about a year or two ago when they literally had 3 brush fires in a few months time frame started by people shooting steel case/bimetal, tracer and other ammo that's not allowed.

The steel jacketed ammo can possibly ricochet and cause a spark there by igniting the dry brush.

That's why magnetic ammo and steel targets are a no go during fire season at Burro.

Steel/bimetal ammo starts fires, dont be an idiot and try and sneak ammo. Just last week some a hole started a fire shooting out on BLM.

I bought 500 rounds of tulammo and went to the outdoor shooting range but they said I couldnt shoot it because it didnt pass the magnet test. My question is what ammo do you guys target practice with? Everything else is too expensive..

I would just have regular ammo with me and take your Tula with you to and when your about to shoot your ar just buy your self a shell catcher to contain all the spent shell so they will not hit the floor And they will not notice the steel case

great idea.. but i dont want to risk any fires.. i also shoot in the woods with a couple guys so ill save it for there..

funny story.. i went today with a couple guys and we ended up buying memberships for 150 each.. and access to the 300 yard range.. so after shooting our rifles a couple older gentlemen came over and asked if they could have our brass.. we didn't mind so we picked it up for them.. after talking for a couple minutes they get in the car and drive off.. we looked over to where they were shooting and the guy forgot his rifle! haha.. being the nice people that we are i called the shop as they were dropping off their target and informed the guy at the desk to let them know.. they came back and just said " were getting old" lol.. would any of you guys taken the rifle???

Yeah, that's great until they see the steel case through the netting of your shell catcher, and then kick you out

Other than taking it to the range staff if I couldn't get any of them to come pick it up, no.
