.223 ammo question

I bought 500 rounds of tulammo and went to the outdoor shooting range but they said I couldnt shoot it because it didnt pass the magnet test. My question is what ammo do you guys target practice with? Everything else is too expensive..

Find another range or buy other ammo that doesn't have a bimetal jacket. Most of my ammo is PPU or Independence.

Just go to another range? And I shoot military m855 rounds with my own powder

Depends on the range. There are plenty that will let you shoot Tula. Main reason why most ranges don't like them because you have to run a magnet to sort it out from the brass.

You won't find factory new brass ammo for the price of Tula, but you can find PMC, Independence, American Eagle for $9-$10 a box if you look around.

i shot 200rds of 9mm through my sig 2022... wish i could have shot all of my tulammo.. i guess ill have to find another range.. or find some brass ammo...

I don’t buy much steel cases ammo anymore but you just have to find a range that’s friendly with steel case or bimetal bullets.

Where are you located? That might help with some range recommendations.

fresno.. i went to Fresno Rifle & Pistol Club.. only other place ive shot was up at pine flat .. great place but too far

I am not familiar with that area… so I can’t give you any recommendations.

Personally I would just source some brass cases ammo and call it a day if you want to shoot at ranges local to you without any added inconvenience.

I typically shoot Federal/American Eagle .223, Federal M193, PMC, PMC X-TAC… Most of my PMC stuff has been found for a decent price when I got it.

Call the range and ask what ammo types are allowed.

Back when it was in stock I would shoot PMC out of my AR. It was usually the cheapest brass-cased non-magnetic stuff out there, and it performed flawlessly for me every shot. Sometimes I'd find Federal or Lake City stuff for decent prices, and it's good stuff too.

To shoot bullets with steel jackets/cores you'll just have to find another range, or do like lots of people I know and shoot it out in the desert on BLM land.

Might be. Burro Canyon Shooting Park is the only range I've been to, but they've always checked my ammo. They didn't check every round/box individually though. I'm not advocating for it, but if you REALLY wanted to you could sneak some in.

I spend a lot of time out in BLM land... but just because you are unlikely to be policed in BLM doesn’t mean shooting steel core ammo is allowed... but I know many do anyways. Hopefully they are not shooting at steel and staying away from brush areas…

At least in the jurisdiction where I shoot its prohibited.

Personally I don’t want to be the guy out there that accidently caused a fire… even sneaking ammo into ranges where not allowed is just being irresponsible and causes risk to other shooters and the range.

My son and I went out to BLM land today, about 10 miles north of the 58 and 5 miles east of the 395. We shot anything and everything we had. I did see a few signs that said "restricted area, patrolled 24hrs" It was right behind the big tee'd up golfball on the east side. Funny thing is this huge plane kept flying over us, the same plane over and over..I don't think we will go back there again.
