    Leaving California

I've been buying lately due to impending legislation that would prohibit purchase but now that we have a plan.

Question - if it is our intent is to have a new home state by mid-2014, should I sell off my easy to replace (outside of ca) guns to save on things I have to move and to leave Ca guns in Ca.

As an ex-Californian. Sell everything "easy to replace" putting the money into an "do not touch, only to buy firearms" account so you can go crazy once you establish residency in the new state. This gives you flexibility when you move, to go down a new direction if you want. I wouldn't sell a gun you are just going to rebuy the exact same firearm after the move.. I would sell a Kimber 1911 to fund a Fusion Firearms or STI 1911, I wouldn't sell a Kimber to buy another Kimber.

Some fun facts and my learnings if I had to do it again:
          • AR-15s are showing up in Walmarts here in the midwest again, yep windham weap, dpms and bushmasters are cash and carry in Walmart.
          • LGS have firearms available, with no "safe doj handgun" list, it opens up the market on availability. (i.e looking from 9mm handgun.. you can choose from anyone, not just from a silly list)
          • Shopping in firearms forums, cabela's gun library, gunbroker, armslist, CDNN email flyer etc become accessible when you just pay the ffl transfer fee(mine charges 20 bucks, no transfer+DROS+tax).
          • Having a firearm fund also gives you the option to purchase a silencer/suppressor if you move to the appropriate state, having your money tied up in CA guns when you move prohibits the "changing" of your collection.
          • Cali-ar15's i.e. mismatched lowers and uppers are worthless out of state, when everyone buying wants matched uppers and lowers.

Having a firearm fund is good, since unexpected expenses always happen in moves, so having the fund allows you to purchase in the new state...I wouldn't count on "I'll have money after the move".

I could see selling CA-version handguns in favor of non-roster ones later, but that's it.

Where are you thinking of relocating to?

Idaho is the strongest contender presently, it has some drawbacks but not nearly as many as staying in California.

I like Nevada for the tax situation but, not a lot for the kids to do, we don't know anyone there, as with Idaho we have friends.

Idaho gets the nod for green, mountains, water, air, fair state and property tax schedule and open space.

                  I agree with this^^^

Sell for a high price in CA, buy whatever you want for cheap in your new state!! Keep a few that you just cant part with if you must

I am looking at prices in other states right now and they are %20-%40 cheaper.

Don't sell! If like the Guns you have, why sell them and possibly pay more to replace them?

Keep what you have, and just add to them!
                    Sorry, not sorry.

Every gun the OP has bought in CA can be replaced when he's out of state. Having said that, there's really no need to sell off the guns to save on moving costs. Unless you have a very large collection, the trunk of your car can accomodate over a dozen firearms. In the back of my old Honda Civic, I was able to put 18 rifles and shotguns, and 9 pistols without any problems. Just wrap them in newspaper so they don't get scratched.

I can see OP's point, especially if he has a lot of long guns. When California passed the gun ban of 2000 I had to take a road trip to move my evil long guns out of state. I filled up the trunk of a rental Caprice. I had to carry my suitcase in the back seat.

desirable guns can be sold quickly. i suggest you wait to sell any firearms until you've got a move date that's cemented, and the plan is in action. if by some chance you don't move as anticipated, you'll be without whatever guns you've sold... and still in california. as they say, 'don't throw the baby out with the bathwater.'

                            People moving without kids...

I still didn't have enough room when we moved, I still pay for a storage unit in California filled with my home theater, motorcycle and tools....

3 kids and a wife can fill a uhaul truck up quickly. (we moved with a 28' uhaul and a 14' trailer and van packed full)
