Storing Ammo

If you are concerned about a house fire destroying your ammo, then you need to build a fire resistant storage container.
If you are asking if a USGI steel ammo can will save your ammo- the answer is no
If you are asking will an ammo can make things safer if a fire burns ammo and then shoots a firefighter- no- ammo needs to be in a chamber to build pressure. Brass and steel ammo pops like popcorn and does not hurt firefighters.Rule 1- ALL GUNS ARE ALWAYS LOADED
Rule 2 -NEVER LET THE MUZZLE COVER ANYTHING YOU ARE NOT PREPARED TO DESTROY (including your hands and legs)
Rule 3 -KEEP YOUR FINGER OFF THE TRIGGER UNTIL YOUR SIGHTS ARE ON THE TARGET
Rule 4 -BE SURE OF YOUR TARGET AND WHAT IS BEYOND IT

Frozen in 2015, it is falling out of date and I can no longer edit the content. But much of it is still good!Comment

I sleep with ammo under my bed. If the ammo is going off due to fire I have bigger issues.NRA Member and Pistol Instructor, CGN/CGF supporter and CRPA Member. Time to put your money where your mouth is.

Throw a package of desiccant in each can and your ammo will be fine. Moisture and vibration are what you need to watch out for.Oppressors can tyrannize only when they achieve a standing army, an enslaved press, and a disarmed populace. -- James Madison

We used to get fires on the range every summer due to gun powder buildup over the year from shooters, dry grass, and it would be setoff by muzzle loaders. Even though shooters aren't suppose to, they throw misfired ammo out in the dirt. All it does is sound like a bunch of firecrackers and the only injuries anyone ever got was pieces of brass casing stuck in our legs. Very minor. That was because we were out there hosing down the fires and they were going off near our feet.
Ammo needs to be in a barrel of a gun for the gasses to give enough pressure and propel the projectile to be extremely dangerous.
I'm not sure I'd leave ammunition stored for long periods of time in garages, unless properly sealed in airtight containers. Also, temperature fluctuations might have a negative impact on the primers, but the most important thing to watchout for is moisture.Comment
