My fiancee once commented that I and some of my friends looked like we were practicing weird rituals as we were checking out some of the stuff from one of my safes - each handler in turn would check the chamber/magwell/cylinder whatever when they were handed a piece.

I had to explain to her that they were indeed rituals - safety rituals - and to not complete your part in it was to display ignorance - at best - and stupidity at worst.

Perhaps your co-worker was checking your competence.

Pretty dangerous way to test it.

That would not make sense, you NEVER hand someone a loaded gun. If he were checking your gun safety, an empty mag, empty chamber might make sense, but not loaded.

Some of the WORSE gun safety violators are military and LEOs.

+100 I will leave ranges if I see guys with badges come in. If you are ever at the Riverside Magnum Range look at the floor ~10 ft in front of one of the rightmost lanes. There is a hole in the concrete from a "cop" showing off to his buddy with a 12 ga. Fool was trying to show the different patterns at different distances and when he tried to show him the close up pattern he pointed the shotgun downward.... hitting the ground, blowing concrete and pellets all over the place. Guess he never learned "be mindful of your target and WHAT IS BEYOND IT" The few others of us that were there packed up our crap and left. I've seen them shoot the walls, the ceiling, the target hangers, you name it... I'd expect that from noobs but not from people we are supposed to trust with carrying around deadly weapons!

I know for a fact that not all Military personnel are properly qualified when it comes to Firearms Safety Rules. Specially in the Navy. In the Navy not everyone gets to shoot a handgun or rifle. And if you do, it is only a basic semi annual qualification that you have to go trough for watch standing. About once a quarter we hear of ND's in the CNRSW area of responsibility. Good on you for schooling him.

I remember about 13 Years ago I taught I was a badass when it came to Firearms and purchased my first hand gun a Colt Commander .45. I was at home playing with it. I loaded the gun and made it Condition 1. I removed the Magazine and the phone rang. I stayed on the phone for about 30 minutes and once I was done with the phone call I went back to play with the gun and I squezed the trigger and BOOOMM it went off, I totally forgot about the round in the Chamber. I nearly pooped in my pants. Since then, my respect for firearms safety grew to monumental proportions.

we had a marine that use to work at Jackson Arms and that fool shot into my boss's office cause he picked up another employees gun with out bothering to check if it was loaded and pulled the trigger. if my boss was sitting in his chair he wouldn't be alive today. so just because someone is properly trained doesn't necessarily mean the can retain what they learned.

back to the subject though.....I would've wiped my finger prints off them guns before handing it back to him....

There are somethings that you never forget in your lifetime and to me that is one of them. Each time I see a gun, that is the first memory that comes into my mind.
