If there's enough barrel clearance you could possibly use an old musket style socket bayonet although you'd probably have to do a lot of searching to find one that would fit your rile since they were never made for lever action rifles of any kind. The other choice would be a plug bayonet, the kind that you basically stick the end of the bayonet into your barrel, of course they may not work that well on a rifled barrel and you'd probably risk damage to your barrel but it would be a bayonet though.

              Three alternatives:

              1) Buy a Mini-14 flash suppressor bayonet mount and attach below magazine tube. Or have one machined to those dimensions.
              2) Have a magazine cap made to accommodate the ring on the bayonet and attach lug to the magazine tube (Like a Mossberg 590).
              3) Remove about 1" of magazine tube, move barrel band back 1". Thread barrel for M1A suppressor, bore out suppressor for bullet diameter, attach to barrel.

CNC machined figure of eight mount, so as not to diminish magazine capacity.

Maybe you can do something with the barrel band?

On most lever actions you have a barrel band that holds the barrel and the tube magazine.

So, maybe a gunsmith or a good welder can make a custom ring on a bayonet or knife. Then he can weld a mount onto the side of the barrel band. Kinda like those old single shots such as the Martini Henry or military Rolling Blocks.

I (excuse me, my "crazy friend") will head to the local tactical store & see about these.

                      Thanks.

I'm trying to avoid any kind of welding. But if the other suggestions don't work out...

Option 2. Try modifying this, S&J bayonet lug, to fit on your lever-action.

Sorry. I mis-read your post. Welding just the barrel band wouldn't be all that bad a thing. Because, as you say, I can always find another. But, I don't think that'll be necessary.

I have another crazy friend who suggested this very thing. His idea was to alter (method not determined yet) the M44 mount to a clamp on (still trying to avoid welding to the barrel) style mount. Then the ring at the base of the blade/top of the hilt would fit over the barrel in the usual way.

As I contemplated that, I logged on & now see Quiet's suggestion:

Since I don't mind having a side-mount bayonet, I don't see why his approach wouldn't work. I'm not sure that modifications would even be necessary, aside from making sure it fits the particular barrel I have in mind.

I am a little disturbed by the price, but good parts cost good money. Still, when I hit the local tactical store, I'll see if I can't save a few bucks.

As for why avoid welding, there are several reasons for this.

A: I am just a bit worried about weakening the barrel.

B: I don't want to ruin the value of the rifle.

C: This is a 'doomsday provision' type of thing, NOT something to have all the time. Once I get it & test it, I plan to take it off & put in a drawer. And there it will sit unless & until things go VERY bad in my neighborhood. This is then, my prep for TEOTWAWKI. I don't really expect things to go all TEOTWAWKI, but I do recognize the possibility that I might be wrong about that. It seems then prudent to have something just a bit 'more' on hand.
