    Monterey Gun Buy Back Question

    First of all, my apologies if this is in the wrong forum or has been answered to death already. (Mods, feel free to move this or edit as necessary.)

    Today I was driving around in beautiful Seaside and saw the signs for a gun buy back happening this weekend. What's the legality of hanging out at an event like this and buying from the individuals throwing their precious historically valuable garbage from them? Has anyone done this and gotten anything decent this way? Talk to me!!

    long gun 50+ years old =Cash & carry.
    handgun 1898 or older = cash & carry
    blackpowder = cash and carry

    any handgun 1899 or newer or any long gun < 50 years needs FFL PPT and 10+ days in the pokey.

    pissing off the local cops & media, while possibly saving a valuable gun from the smelter = priceless

    just letting somebody know their gun is worth a lot more than the 100$ safeway card or whatever is a good thing IMO

      It's been done in Texas. No legality issues from what I saw and heard about it. Obviously the cops didn't like it very much but they can't legally do anything about it. The people selling their guns would prefer cash instead of grocery gift cards anyways.

        Good idea no problem other than you will need follow state laws and I don't think they will be the type of people that will be willing to do a background check. Buddy of mine tried that in SF. Cops told him to leave . He didn't push the issue. He did get a nazi marked Luger. It was beat but same 100$ they would have got from the city. He was trying to get a Russian ak.

          I saw this in action up in Seattle about 3 months ago. Bystanders were offering more money to the people in line then the police/city officials were. The police didn't/couldn't stop the bystanders from making offers.
          Cheers.

            Thanks for the info. I'm gonna do some research and bring some documentation in case I need to educate some reluctant buyers. Maybe also a big sign or hire someone to twirl it for me. Any other guys in Monterey willing to make it a group thing this weekend? This might be fun!

                  Is there an FFL open on Saturday to do the transfers? Big 5, maybe?

                          How about a sticky for date/location for gun buy events?
