I use a slip-on butt pad on my M44 sometimes to lengthen the short stock.

im sure lots of russians decided that there mosin kicked to much and just went bare knuckle lol if ppl are shooting at you how confortable you are isnt your number 1 prority

Keep the mosin tucked in the pocket nice and tight and close to your cheek and you'll be fine. You eventually get used to it after shooting for awhile. Dont hold it like an AR where some of the buttstock touches your collarbone.

Between the Hitlerites (Nazi stood for National Socialist, can't be dissing socialists), Stalinists and finding food, water, shelter, warmth, ammo and a weapon, I think recoil was the least of Yuri's problems.

What the hell do I know? I'm between two and three times the size of the average WWII Russian infantryman and I still don't "enjoy" Mosins.

Put a real enemy to my country, culture, way of life and everything that I know and hold dear in front of me and I think I'd learn to deal with it.

i did about 80 rounds last time out with the mosins with no stinken pads...
hell my fiance who is 5' and a little over 115lbs did about 30 rounds with no pad and didnt even complain

only real benefit of the pad imo is adding to the length of pull

You are holding your rifle incorrectly.
Place the butt of the rifle on the edge of your pectoral muscle rather than the pocket of your shoulder. simple physiology - your pectoral can take a beating much better than your shoulder joint.

I was at the range the other day and I noticed two guys shooting a Mosin. When I looked closer I noticed they were using a towel on their shoulder to stop some of the recoil. It had me thinking of what the Russian's went through back in the day with those rifles. During a conflict did any Russian infantry man have to use any kind of towel to help with recoil or were they tuff enough to deal with it.

I shot 300 rounds with the original stock and I wasn't the slightest bit sore.

Have the top of your buttstock under the clavicle. Like Duenor said, your pectoral will take the beating...not your collarbone. Try this, with your right arm extended parallel to the floor, reach over with your left hand and tuck your four fingers into your armpit. While your digging away with your left hand, make a motion like you are trying to grasp a bar. That little spot under your clavicle but still not touching the socket of your shoulder is the "pocket".
