The associated DEFCAD.org site, which was just a distribution for CAD files was seized too.

I can't see how this is an April Fools joke.

Its kind of like yelling "FIRE!" in a crowded theater.

And, what jurisdiction does DHS have in this matter?

3D gun printing possible "by the end of April"

Depending on your view of gun rights, Cody Wilson is either a genius or an evil genius.

The Texas law student leads Defense Distributed and its Wiki Weapons Project, with the goal to “create the world’s first 100% 3D printable gun” and to make those plans “freely available.”

“The assumption is one day the technology will become more ubiquitous and widespread,” Wilson said Wednesday on CNN’s “The Lead with Jake Tapper.”

“It will fall in price, and materials will be developed in a better place than they are now, so yes, if you were to have one in your home and you have the gun file, you can just click print and have the gun.”

That computer file would have the instructions for a 3D printer to manufacture gun parts or an entire gun in your home. And if you think 3D printers are the stuff of science fiction and the future, they were the standout products at the Consumer Electronics Show earlier this year.

“It’s still in its infancy,” Wilson said, but maturity doesn’t take long to follow, he added.

“Well to have a printable gun – it’s my intention to have that done by the end of this month and we’re at the end of March now so it’s my intention to have it done by April,” he said.

This preemptive strike looks like a particularly inventive April Fool's Day joke. I earnestly hope that it is. However, it's worth pointing out that Defense Distributed, which is pioneering 3D-printed personal firearms, was planning to make Wiki weapons available by the end of the month. And yes, the "Undetectable Firearms Act" is a real thing.

It does not look anything like an April Fools joke. Someone really wants to stop this idea from going any further and wants to make a painful example to scare everyone else away from ever trying it. The undetectable firearms act thing is a doozy. I don't know the details of it but I assume that almost any 3d printed receiver would violate that, because they don't have metal or anything that shows up on xrays.

The Wiki page is still viable.

Wilson is reported to have an FFL but he was not a weapons manufacturer but rather

"Wilson has said that the organization operates to publish intellectual property and information developed by licensed firearms manufacturers and the public"

So, that's where the copyright violation must come in to play.

Still, there are other sites that have distributed specs and plans for AR components for years.

Q: What are the specifics of the Undetectable Firearms Act?
The meat of the law makes it a federal offense to "manufacture, import, sell, ship, deliver, possess, transfer, or receive" a firearm capable of defeating airport metal detection. It requires that any firearm, minus the stock, grips, and magazine, have an X-ray detection signature no less than that of a calibration sample containing 3.7 ounces of stainless steel.

The law also prohibits you from making or selling a firearm that "does not generate an [X-ray] image that accurately depicts the shape of the component." In other words, it's a federal crime to make and sell a gun that looks like something else to an airport X-ray scanner.

This is insane application of the law.

Why would the law apply to the personal manufacture of the firearm when other polymer lower manufacturers have done business for years?

The lowers that Defense Distributed were building were using normal lower parts kits so they contained metal components which would make them very detectable in airport metal detectors.
