I am also curious as to the legality of firearms in public transportation, as there really seems no specific mention of it in the CA firearms laws...
I believe it's up to the public transportation agency, but I'm not sure.

Like I posted before, I put in an inquiry to the Oakland/Alameda Ferry guys (Blue and Gold). The response was, "in accordance with the safety plan we filed with the USCG, no weapons unless police, etc" - I'm paraphrasing here.

I did a bit of research and apparently vessels have to file a security plan with the USCG. The plan is secret - so the terrorists won't know it. However, USCG only requires vessels to keep "prohibited weapons" off the boats. Legally owned weapons can be carried on the boats in accordance with local law.

I reposted the question to the guy at Blue & Gold who was so nice to respond to my question, asking if a person could carry an unloaded, cased, locked weapon on board. I mentioned that commercial air carriers allow it and other ferry companies around the nation allow it, too (even in NYC!).

He said that they might have to refile the security plan with the USCG and didn't know if the carrier would want to do that, but he'd look into it. I thought it was a pretty positive response. Certainly not the brush-off I expected.

When I'm not so lazy, I'll post the email string.

Why dont you rent a van?

Why dont you folks put in for a van rental? With unlimited milage you could hit a bunch of ranges.

Some of you are so damn disrepectful. This guy actually fights for YOUR rights. What have you done? Bought 12 lowers? This place has really gone downhill since mid-december. All of you high speed-low drag types need to show some respect for others. ARFCOM is more sane than this place lately.

Tom, I may be moving back to the East Bay. I am in process of getting my FFL and I have big plans. So I may be around for shoots in the near future.

I agree with this. This thread was created to ask for transportation, not if his "poem" was written correctly, and not for directions to the local BART station.

I MAY be wrong and I HOPE I am wrong, but I'm sensing the hostility stems from the group's sexual preference. This is besides the issue since this forum is NOT related to preferences.

The only thing anyone should be concerned with is that the Pink Pistols are a group that is PRO GUN in SAN FRANCISCO. That by itself is worth the support.

                    Agreed.

It is harder to actually stand up for your rights, than to BS about it on the intarweb.

                      Wait a minute.

Tom stated that it was difficult for PP members to get to the range and asked for help. Some respondents offered rides, some offered other suggestions like public transport, car share and van rentals. Some even took the step of contacting private carriers to determine their policies on weapons transport.

These were people trying to help.

But somehow, because there wasn't a, "Hey, pick you up tomorrow" response, folks are homophobic?

Tom's posts are a little difficult to read (remember hating Shakespeare?). And folks will make insensitive comments about piddling issues, but chalking it up to intolerance?

If I lived near SF, I would offer to help, but I'm too far away. If you live in or near SF and can help the pink pistol members carpool, you should try shooting with them once. You will be impressed by how knowledgable some of them are.

I would agree with tboyer in that using public transportation in this scenario would more likely mean people would just not go. I wouldn't unless it was plainly an emergency situation, and in that scenario I would use a cab.

Tom - you have a real challenge there. I don't know how discretionary wealthy your group is, but rent a cab/charter/van together or something once a month? One could organize the thing and just have people commit to paying even if they no-show if they signed up. Perhaps a creative person with a car could be found who could use the side income?

                              Hope it works out.

Also good luck to all of you in S.F. It's ground-zero right now in RKBA in Cali. Thanks for your efforts in changing some people's minds out there.

Yep, you're wrong. My "hostility" (to use your poor choice of term) is directed towards folks without any form of medium-distance transportation, in CALIFORNIA of all places. It's pathetic. Don't these folks EVER get out of San Francisco?
For that matter, how WOULD they get out of San Franciso in case of an emergency?

And the BART suggestion was a reasonable one, since 'mass transit' is so sweet up there that 'cars aren't worth it'.

Another suggestion for transportation - range day minivan rental. Enterprise rental will even bring the dang vehicle TOO you. Split the day's rental amongst the number of shooters. A minivan from SFO is $56+
                                $10-15ea, say once a month?

/and I gotta say, between the tv shows about the law enforcement crime scene up there, bay area politics, the bums, reports from http://www.zombietime.com/ - and the descriptive comments in this topic itself, SanFran REALLY seems pretty nasty.

/posting from Los Angeles, Californian for a lot of years, and yes, I've been to San Francisco a few times for both business and pleasure.
