The San Francisco PinkPistols Chapter, needs help

    My name is Tom Boyer
and it looks like we will
not be able to hold anymore
    shoots.
    Most PinkPistols members
do not have a car, and at one point
the SF chapter almost died because,
when some one would email me asking
about a shoot, I would reply
    unless you have a transportation
you probable wont be able to
get to a range, of course they
    were discourage. Also once
    a reporter from the examiner
wanted to attend a shoot, when
I asked him if he would drive me,
he never got back to me.
So if some one could provide
a ride once a month, every
    other month, or once every
    three months, that would
    be a great help.
    Thank you

Is there a reason why PinkPistol members don't own automobiles?

Perhaps automobiles were banned in SF shortly before handguns were!
After all, it makes sense... automobiles are responsible for more deaths than guns!

I grew up in SF and it's a pain to own automobiles and there are a lot of other more attractive alternatives. If one needs to travel within the city, the bus will take you within 3-4 blocks of where ever you want to go. For those who don't like sitting on a crowded bus or waiting for one, bicycling will get you around. Also, because SF is relatively densely packed with people, stores, and other services, you don't have to go very far to get whatever you need. Owning a car in SF is a hassle because it's difficult to find parking, your car will get vandalized unless you live in an affluent neighborhood, many homes are older and built during or before WW 2 and have garages that will fit only one car. It's not just Pink Pistol members who don't own cars, a lot of people in SF don't own one because the advantages are outweighed by the disadvantages.

I'd happily assist in driving some people, only problem is that I live 20 miles south of SF.

I am unfamiliar with the rules for carrying a cased gun on busses or taxi's. It would seem to me that there would have to be some allowance made for you to legally transport your firearms on public transportation. Has anyone called and talked with the public trans people?

Suggest a date and a place and it will be easier to plan for members here if they can show up and give some guys a ride. It's kinda hard to make promises without knowing when

Well, it sounds like you've already rejected BART but you were also throwing out numbers like "three hours" so maybe you haven't considered the following...

The San Leandro range is at the end of Davis Street. The San Leandro BART station is on Davis Street. There are taxis all the time at the BART station and I'm going to guess there's a bus line that runs down Davis. I'm going to guess it's maybe 3 miles between the two points.

The BART from Powell station to San Leandro station is 27 minutes.

The San Leandro range has indoor and outdoor and there's classroom space that I bet you could arrange to use if you scheduled it in advance. I think it's worth looking into anyway.

                          tboyer,

If you would reconsider the Bart thing or maybe decide to use the SF/Alameda Ferry, I could arrange to drive to the Davis range. I live pretty close to it. I have a Tahoe and could accomodate a few people.

I posted an inquiry to the Oakland/Alameda Ferry.

I take BART to San Leandro all the time, and usually you can take AC Transit #55 down to about 2 blocks from the range. They only run every 30 minutes on weekdays and 1 hour on weekends, however. But that 2 block walk is kinda unnerving sometimes, especially alone as a girl (some uncomfortable situations have happened).

I am also curious as to the legality of firearms in public transportation, as there really seems no specific mention of it in the CA firearms laws...
