Trading firearm(s) for ammo. Worth it?

Someone may have 5 AR-15s and no ammo, hence trading a gun to get more ammo.

Someone else may have sold all of their guns in .40S&W but has a crapload of that ammo left over and wants a gun in another caliber that they also have, to consolidate the number of different calibers they keep on hand.

There are probably a couple of other circumstances as well that would make sense for some people to want to trade a gun for ammo, or vice versa.

I personally agree with the OP with the exception of not having a gun to shoot the ammo your trading, but as far as being "worth it" is completely relative from person to person.

Well if you can trade $800 worth of ammo for $1000 worth of gun then why not.

They both either start out or end up as cash. All things being equal I don't see a difference between selling a gun and buying ammo or just trading for it.

Simple as it gets , really.

There are so many reasons.
!. A guy who has been storing a surplus of ammo and broke his gun, see's it's present value and may now afford a new gun.
2. A guy who bought a gun he thought he needed but doesn't, really needs ammo he cant find for his other guns.
3.Trading may help out a fellow gunner.*
etc. etc. etc............
It starts with cash & ends in fair trade

Normally I'd agree with the OP.

However I got a Rifle in 300 Win Mag for free and traded it for a lot of ammo in a caliber I shoot. In this case it worked well for me to offload a gun That was free and that I would never shoot for a ton of ammo I'd use.

Yet it is perfectly exceptable to trade a gun for cash, I can't think of anything more expendable then cash.

Personally, I would not dump guns for ammo. Guns are harder to come by than ammunition. I have few guns, but lots of ammo.

Then again, it is a "free market", as reiterated umpteen times daily by the economics majors who seem to make up the majority of CalGuns members.

So I guess it comes down to the circumstances, right? Trade up, trade down, need, don't need, with the banic going on and the fear of losing our beloved magazine fed rifles. I truly can't wait for this to return to normal. Maybe if we wave shiny objects from a string these anti's will become distracted and leave us alone.

Some people have guns they do not use, need, or want.

Unless the gun has sentimental value; if I don't use it, I get rid of it. I have enough guns for any situation that would need a gun. Although, there are some that I want and some that I will still buy.

Or, sometimes I'll buy a gun in hopes that it will be better than the one I'm using for a given purpose. Every once in a while, it is. More often it isn't.

I don't really collect. When I get rid of a gun, I trade or sell for whatever I deem appropriate.
