Shoot Lefty, but I'm a righty!?

    Hi everyone,
I'm pretty new to purchasing guns. I grew up around guns. Was taught how to use it if I had to, etc. BUT, I've only been out a couple of times to actually shoot and practice. When I was younger my dad was the one to show me and he's the type to make you nervous. I just always thought I was awful and not any good at shooting and figured it was these "big" guns he'd hand over and tell me to fire off.
Long decade short....I finally decided I wanted to pursue obtaining my CCW and knew I'd need to find a handgun of my own (not just something my husband has and that I can shoot if need be) So, the search was on. I purchased a small .22 mag revolver and after about an hour of range time I realized something. I can't shoot very well. I went home, mad, discouraged and pretty ticked off. How was I going to ever be able to get a CCW if I was a total idiot at the range with a target 10 feet in front of me and struggling to get any sort of grouping in an acceptable area.
My husband then asked me, "hey, you golf left handed, right?" I thought about it for a minute. Yep, and play ALL sports left handed. I took my gun out to a great old outdoor "shooting" place (out in the woods) and sure enough! I'm a lefty and thankfully I'm not cross dominant and did ok. BUT, now I'm searching for a CCW gun that is a semi auto...finding all sorts of guns I'd like to carry, but just running ito trouble with the placement of the slide stop or mag release. etc.....
SO, are you a left handed shooter? What is comfortable to you? Or, better yet, anyone else a freak like me and write, eat, use a knife, etc righty but guns and other sports left? Just another issue to overcome. I'm seriously consider a Kahr PM9 (if I can get my hands on one) Or the Ruger LC9 (not so sure the trigger pull will suit me)
Any inside adivice would be great. I've found some thoughts on youtube and of course have heard the "Too bad, just figure it out" line over and over. Easy to say if you are a right handed shooter!
    Thanks!
    Kt

Right handed and left eye dominant. My son is the same way and had to learn to shoot left handed. The xd9 sub compact (ccw) has a mag release that is lefty friendly.
I'm sure there are models out there set up for a lefty, don't get discouraged! I'm sure others will chime in and be some more help. Your avatar pic would work

I'm a lefty and right eye dominant and learned to shoot righty. Fortunately, that made gun shopping easier. But I practice pistol shooting with each hand, and except for my 1911's (w/no ambi safety), have very little issue. The casing is ejected across your body and higher chance you'll be hit with it though.

Same here. I only shoot long guns lefty though, pistols, I shoot with my right hand. I am left eye dominant.

Is this weird? I'm 42 and started shooting at about 8 yrs. old.

You can take a look at the S&W M&P line-up as they have a slide stop on both sides and the mag release is reversible.

The H&K P2000 is nice with both the slide stop lever and mag release on both sides

Left-handed right eye cross dominant. If I had it to do all over again, I would start shooting right handed. But you cannot teach an old dog new tricks so here I am.

Most lefties grew up in a right handed world and learn to adapt. I can operate a right handed bolt gun although all but one of mine are lefties. So you can adapt to whatever controls there are. Modernly most guns are becoming more lefty friendly. What you want to watch with a semi-auto pistol is where does it eject the brass. I shot a friend's 1911 one time and it was coming straight at my face. My own 1911 does not do that. I think it is more important to find a grip that fits your hand and seems to point naturally than where the controls are located.

Finally, for all you lefties who are cross dominant, I learned to shoot a pistol semi-ghetto (at a 45 degree angle) Feels natural and I can hold it in my left hand and use my right eye more, although I shoot nearly as well right handed.

Right handed and left eye dominant here. At first I closed my left eye with my right eye open and was finally able to get tight groupings at 10yds. Then I placed scotch blue painters tape on the left lens of my shooting glasses and was still able to get tight groupings. After a lot of practice I was then able to remove the scotch tape one day and have now adapted. Skeet and trap shooting I'll still use the scotch tape as I don't practice enough but no longer have issues with handguns. YMMV.

I'm a total righty, except for rifles, shotguns, hockey and I'm a goofy footer on the boards.

I'm left eye dominant but right handed. I shoot longarms and eat left handed. Everything else I do right handed. Pistol shooting doesn't matter, I can shoot equally with either hand.

Thanks! Glad to know I'm not alone in my weirdness....I am left eye dominant and it's just wayyy easier for my to shoot left handed as well, even though I can shoot right handed and do the head cock cross dominant thing. My left trigger finger is also about 10 times stronger for whatever reason (maybe all those years of school and writing with my right fingers?) I can't even shoot my Taurus 941 with my right hand in DA, it's that weak. Lef handed it's still a big challenged to keep fron pulling to the right. Still a fun little gun to have. Picking up a Glock 27 Gen 4 as soon as pay day rolls around again. Not so excited on the looks of it, but I need something for a CCW class and my husband is already using the XD that we both like for the class. I'm thinking I'll use the glock and unless I fall in love with it somehow after shooting it a bunch(never shot a glock) I'll still be on the hunt for an older HK 40 cal. My dad's is the first one I ever shot and it's still my favorite. I can pick it up and be pretty accurate even after not toughing it for 10 years. Love that thing! I think it's a model from about 98-2000....certainly not like the new ones....sigh.

I too, suffer from cross dominance

Right handed and left eye dominant. I shoot my rifles lefty and handguns right.

Depends on the rifle, but there's nothin' like some hot brass kissin' your cheek.
