    i got pulled over today

    Hi everyone

I have a question. I was pulled over due to a missing license plate on a trailer I was towing, as well as a technicality about how my equipment was to be fastened.

The police officer took my license and ran it through dispatch. While he was talking to me about the equipment on the trailer he gets a reply over the radio and immediately asks if I have a gun on me. I didn't have any of my guns on me. I was finishing up a job.

I said I wasn't since I didn't have any on me or in the truck. I have one m&p 9 and one ar-15. My question is, is this something I have to live with whenever I get pulled over, or why Is that information instantly available during a traffic stop

    Thanks,

    Sergio villa

your firearms have no relation to your license or even running a subject check on you. they would have had to check gun registration separately which is generally not ran on a normal traffic stop.

only thing that i can think of is that if you own a handgun, it had to be registered when you bought it....so maybe that shows up on their system....but i didnt know that came up during regular traffic stops.
If you suck with irons you will suck with optics. The difference is the aimpoint will allow you to suck faster and a scope will give you a closer look at how much you suck.

I can see how they would know about the m&p 9 since we have the great handgun registry that has prevented so many robberies and saved so many lives, (yes trolling ) but I'm not totally sure they have that information readily available. Did the officer specify as to what kind of firearm or did he just ask in general?

From what I understand, firearms ownership does not show up by default when they run your info during routine traffic stops. However, I heard they have access to some software where they can look you up for any guns registered to you. Obviously something will have to lead them to do so since I doubt they do it for every traffic stop they conduct.

Do you have any gun related decals or anything or that sort on your car?

I thought (was told) the fact some of us own RAWs and that comes up when they run our address, name or license info.

I can assure you guys it was a simple traffic stop. I not a suspisios looking individual or anything. Lol. I didn't even get a ticket. The officer just educated me on proper fastening of a load. But he asked me to step out of the truck for the education part. While I was out there he calls in my information. A few minutes later he gets a call on the radio and he asks me. " do you have any guns with you." I say no I do not. The proceeds to tell me " the reason I ask is because it came back saying you own a gun." To that I reply yeah I won two. They aren't with me though. And that was that.

Did the officer ask for some sort of thorough check when he called my info in.

I'm sorry, didnt see your post count so you may not know the lingo.... RAW = Registered Assault Weapon.

the officer would have had asked the dispatcher to check if there are any guns registered to you, and they would have to check separately from running your license. only information provided when running a license are traffic violations. even if they checked NCIC, that would only show missing person info, any warrants, probabtion info, and a couple other things but not registered guns. then separately could check if guns are registered.

LEO: Can I get a DL on a stop?

You get about 8 returns either showing a hit or clear from checking out of state warrants, if person returns as a missing person, probabtion info, sex registrant and a couple of things but nothing about guns.

LEO: Can you check to see if the party has any firearms registered to them.
                        Disp types: Gun3.Ofcr.Smith,John.010101
                        Return Looks similar to:
                        Smith,John 01/01/01
                        1234 Main St

some areas I'm sure have different SOP, but I can't imagine someone being required to check every person having a firearm on a "routine" traffic stop. if they had to run all that on every stop, unless its a remote area, that dispatcher would be getting worked having to do all that every single time.

Sorry about that. I have been lurking for a long time. I just don't post very much.
I isn't a RAW. The AR is an OLL rifle.

It was a work truck so no gun related stickers at all. The fact he asked me about my guns caught me by surprise. But it looks like they don't usually look up gun ownership at every traffic stop so it may have been an isolated incident. I don't know.

I've never been asked and I've got a couple of tickets in the last 5 years.

I own 11 RAWs and am a prolific gun collector and trader (hobby). Probably over 150 handgun DROS in the last 15 years.
