It's okay to lie to cops fishing and looking to manufacture a criminal out a law abiding citizen.

Why not call up the department's non-emergency number and ask what their policy is? I think the big question here was whether this was just the OP being run like this, or is this something that this particular department does as a matter of policy.
If they do that for everyone now for whatever reason, that's a bit disconcerting for me, since it's the sort of thing that might spread to other departments, and could end up being SOP for everyone before too long.
Perhaps a policy like this is a fallout of the Santa Cruz officer shootings.

I was pulled over about 12:30AM Sunday morning for a suppposedly non-functioning license plate light (fishing for a DUI I presume) and the officer didn't ask about guns, nor have I ever been asked. Ran my DL, told me to fix the light and quickly left.

My plate light was working, albeit a kind of dim, when I looked after he left.

This happens to a buddy of mine all the time. He is a black guy who drives an expensive car and gets pulled over all the time (my guess is racial profiling) and is asked if he has a gun on him. The guy has a masters degree in teaching, is a football, wrestling, and track coach. He is a great dude but for whatever reason he gets pulled over a lot!

Take off the tinfoil hat bro. It's just a standard question to see how you react. Alot of times a persons demeanor will either cause him to look closer or not. That's why they say stuff like "Are you carrying any hand grenades or RPGs"?? They are just gauging your response. You also will see them ask you "Do you mind if I check your person. Just for my saftey".. They are trying to get you to consent to a search. They do the same with a vehicle if you peak their interest. Do you mind if I look in your car..Just for my safety".. It's another tool in their arsenal. Cops aren't as stupid as people like to think lol.

The fact that the LEO asked you too step out of the truck makes me think he was 'spooked' by something. Normally, they leave you sitting in the car for routine traffic stop. Maybe this is why he checked the gun ownership.
You might look like someone they are actively seeking. Maybe a robber or an abusive guy that just put someone in the hospital.
I have owned guns for decades and have never been asked about gun ownership during a traffic stop.
I am glad that they pay attention to loads on trailers and trucks. In my area, stuff falls off on the freeway way too often. This is almost always due too a poorly secured or unsecured load.

The radio traffic and the question of having a gun was probably a coincidence. Most likely a question he frequently asks.

Jay, I have been in our dispatch before after having surgery but I do work patrol. While I'm sure our system isn't the latest and greatest, it certainly does have the ability to give all those returns with one entry. It's actually very nice for both citizens and officers because it speeds things up. The faster I know you aren't on America's Most Wanted, have a valid license, and aren't on parole/probation the faster you get to go about your business. Likewise, I know that much sooner if you are someone who instead gets a free ride to jail.

Surg, I understand your apprehension having your registered weapons available to law enforcement but that has been available for some time. It is a product of CA requirements for the registering of (at this point) certain firearms. People really seem to get confused when it comes to questions being asked by LEO's: I can ask you just about anything I want during a traffic stop while writing a ticket, waiting for dispatch to tell me your driver's license status, etc as long as it does not (I believe off the top of my head the exact words the courts use is) immeasurably extend the stop. And you of course can answer how you please or say nothing at all. Just remember the scenario I gave you: Despite what some think, not every weapons query is an attempt to find a reason to take you to jail. This is the reason I encourage people to once the stop is done to ask the officer on the stop any questions about what happened. Many are more than happy to explain why they did something.

sounds better than what I've worked with. our center just got rid of our Black/green monitors that ran a DOS based CAD and requires string of syntax for each request.

it just sucks LEOs ask unnecessary questions to do a little fishing. if they stop someone for speeding, give them a ticket for speeding, done, no need to fish.in this instance he asked the OP to step out of the vehicle to show him is load was not tied down properly, it probably wasnt secure at 4 points. i would like to know how it would have went if the OP answered yes to the weapons question.we will never know.
