Prone shooting at local ranges?

Did not know that. Last few times I went, there were people proned out all up and down the line. I always ask the RO first regardless, each has their own preferences and interpretation of the range rules, and we all know you don't argue with the RO.

Metcaf you can shoot prone.

I've shot prone at Chabot's public range and it's not a problem. Just don't move the table so far that it interferes with the guy next to you. Do it safely and with common sense and there's no need to ask the RO, since they'll keep an eye on what you're doing if they haven't seen you there before.

I've seen people shooting prone at both Sunnyvale and Metcalf range in San Jose.

At the range I shoot at (Manteca Sportsmen), position shooting is allowed. You must be to the left of your bench and behind the normal firing line. I've never shot prone but I have shot kneeling and off-hand. Hopefully, nobody would trip over you if you were prone!

When the club does the monthly high power match, the shooters are on the grass immediately in front of the (normal) firing line.

Have this range fixed up their field full of groundsquirrel holes yet? Haven't been there in a few yrs.

Never been a problem any range I went to. Prone, sitting, kneeling....

I've never "asked", but I look like I know what I'm doing. People walking down the line just step around/over you. Never been an issue, and never had an RO say a single word about it.

I would think, that RO's would generally not bother you, because prone, sitting, kneeling (properly) is a clear indicator that you are serious about marksmanship skills, instead of sitting on a bench supported, blasting away.

Of course, it would never hurt to ask the RO first...

Sorry to resurrect, but I have a small variation of the exact same question. I too went to an appleseed this past weekend (Sunland), and being a Bay Area resident, want to now shoot prone at a 25 yard range.

I read on some other threads on calguns that Metcalf allows prone on the 200 yard range, but I'm specifically looking for someplace I can shoot prone at a 25 yard range, before I go further out. Do all the ranges mentioned above (especially Metcalf, since they are open after work on weeknights) allow prone at 25?

It's too far away for the OP but others might be interested to know that my local range allows firing from ANY position you care to get into. And if you bring portable firing stands you can place them at any distance you like. Paper targets for up close but steel out past 100yrds is ok.

USI in concord doesn't allow prone on the 100y public range but they do at the 200y members range.
