    Prone shooting at local ranges?

Super noob question, bear with me.

I took an Appleseed recently, and would like to practice before taking it again. Of course, we shot prone, sitting, and standing. But both times I've been to outdoor ranges every single person is shooting exclusively sitting off a bench rest. At Chabot, where we did the Appleseed, we were shooting from 25 yards on the 50 yard range, so out in the open, far in front of the normal firing line and not under cover.

Can one shoot prone at most ranges? I'm very tall and if I were to shoot prone and remain behind the normal firing line, I'm afraid my extended leg would trip people. What about sitting?

I presume shooting off-hand is fine.

At the range I shoot at (Manteca Sportsmen), position shooting is allowed. You must be to the left of your bench and behind the normal firing line. I've never shot prone but I have shot kneeling and off-hand. Hopefully, nobody would trip over you if you were prone!

When the club does the monthly high power match, the shooters are on the grass immediately in front of the (normal) firing line.
Check back later for a witty comment.

Thanks. I should have said I live in San Francisco, so Angeles Range would be quite the drive...

              Range in Richmond

The Richmond Rod & Gun allows prone at the far left of the 100 yd. range.
I have shot my SKS there.

Richmond Rod & Gun has a few spots on the 100 yard for prone shooting. There's sheltered spots on the right side of the 100 and unsheltered on the left.

If you're a member, I think you can also use the 200.

Maybe it depends on the RO, but I've asked and been allowed to shoot prone at Richmond rod and gun at any old bench on the 100.

I've practiced positional shooting at Chabot before....just talk with the Range Officer walking the line. I just move the bench behind the concrete, sweep the area and put my shooting mat down...just always be aware to keep your rifle muzzle past where the end of the benches. It's all good.

Sunnyvale allows prone and will move the bench out for you.

I throw all my gear down on my shooting mat, then I tell the RO, I'll be shooting prone between the benches. Never a problem. Looking like you know what you are doing helps.

I've seen people prone at the indoor Davis Street range.

Metcalf (Santa Clara County) allow prone.

Now, getting a spot is the real trick (they've been quite busy the last few times I've been there).
