    using less common firearms

    Reading some of the range story threads where newbies have to ask for help at every step to operate a firearm got me thinking that I, like probably 95% of the people on this forum would be able to pick up, load and fire a vast majority of the firearms you'd be likely to come across.

    My next thought was about what less common arms I could encounter that I might have trouble with. At first I couldn't think of anything, but I finally came up with a belt-fed things like the 1919. I have fired one, but I didn't load the belt. I watched the owner struggle with loading it but I couldn't see what he was trying to do. I'm sure I could figure it out given some time, but I don't think I could just pick one up, load and fire.

    Right before starting this thread, it occurred to me that I have zero experience with percussion cap and black powder arms. Without any instruction beforehand, I wouldn't be interested in even attempting using those for anything but a club.

    How about you? Anything you couldn't just pick up and use?

      I've never held one of those, so I didn't think to add it to my mental list. Good to know they aren't straight forward.

        The SPAS 12 is a pretty complicated gun. It would take me a bit to figure out how to switch it back and forth between pump and semi auto, safety it, release the slide (when it is cocked), release the bolt when it is locked back in semi mode, etc. When I handled one for about 30 seconds at a friends house, I didn't get it figured out. But, a few minutes more with it would solve that.

                My Dan Wesson revolver tends to through off many people, the cylinder release is on the left front and most people tend to look to the rear of the cylinder for it.

                A friend of mine inherited some old semi pistols and one of them took finding someone's scan on the internet to figure how to even get the stupid mag to release (the slide HAD to be locked back first), wish I could remember the manufacturer of it.

                    Hmmm, I hadn't really considered shotguns as most of them are so basic in function. I've never even seen a SPAS 12 in real life let alone had the opportunity to handle one.

                    Are they available(as in new) again in the free states or are they a thing of the past? Seems like the Benelli has taken over the foreign-made semi-auto market.

                      They are unimportable and NFA DD's for the reason in your sig.

                          922r is scary, but the DD law, which has the same sporting purposes test is even scarier. BATF can declare any shotgun a DD on a whim.

                            Hmmm, I'd never heard that before. I assume it's due to the smooth bore?
                            Hopefully Heller goes well for us so we can s**tcan some of this garbage.
