    50 BMG Question

I was cleaning out a safe last week and found my 50 bmg rifle I purchased back in December 2004 from a local gun shop (it was a special order). I remember buying the rifle and going through some extra paperwork for the DOJ registration that they mandated to go along with the rifle.

I thought about starting to shoot this rifle again because I just bought a new scope. Just to be safe, I went through some old files to try and pull out the DOJ paperwork they sent me originally when I reg'd the rifle. I cannot for the life of me find it! It's been 8+ years now and I am certain I lost the paperwork. Since the gun shop handled all the paperwork at the time of sale for the extra DOJ 50 bmg reg, it's been a little confusing to me remembering how the process went.

Should I call into DOJ and ask them for some kind of number or a letter so I can keep it with me when I shoot?

I know the time of registration is way past done so I need to get a copy of the number they assigned me originally in 2005 so I can go out and shoot this thing with some piece of mind. Whats the best way?

Oh, and the gun shop is long gone, no help from them.........

Contact doj after you take rifle out of state and have a friend hold for you. That is my suggestion. If paperwork gone you could get a visit you don't want.

It was a similar registration process as the 1989 and 2000 CA ban

If you purchased your gun in 2004, then you still had to register it as an Assault Weapon in CA by a certain date or surrender the rifle.

The CA DOJ can send you a verification letter of what Assault Rifles you have registered.

You are not required to update your address with the DOJ as the DMV info is available to them.

You might get a copy of the form and keep a copy with the device.
Rule 1- ALL GUNS ARE ALWAYS LOADED

Rule 2 -NEVER LET THE MUZZLE COVER ANYTHING YOU ARE NOT PREPARED TO DESTROY (including your hands and legs)

Rule 3 -KEEP YOUR FINGER OFF THE TRIGGER UNTIL YOUR SIGHTS ARE ON THE TARGET

Rule 4 -BE SURE OF YOUR TARGET AND WHAT IS BEYOND IT
      (thanks to Jeff Cooper)

I am 100% sure I did all the right extra paperwork, I remember it being a separate process from the DROS. I did it at the gun store and a few months later got a letter from the DOJ with what I vaguely remember to be a blue card with a number on it.

How would I go about calling the DOJ? Should I ask for a "verification letter of what assault rifles I have registered" ? I know for I fact this 50 is the only one, I don't have anything else.

I think the real question here is: How big is your safe that you clean it out and find a 50 BMG? I better go double check mine.

fill out this form and send it in, http://oag.ca.gov/sites/all/files/pd...teCitizen.pdf? . It will give you a list of any handguns that are registered to you, and any RAWs or .50BMG rifles that are also registered to you.

Do you want an AOW or C&R SBS/SBR in CA?

Then you can bring it out to a match at Coalinga or at USI in Concord if you are close.

I'm pretty sure it's just a letter with the rifles make/model/serial and a registration number.

Hehehe, just a joke. I have never forgotten the hole it burned in my pocket, I bought it at the last possible minute before the ban. It's nothing special, just a tube gun (Anzio) and I shot it once in 2005 at the 1000 in Sac.

Real reason it has sat there forever has been I could never get good glass on it, I just bought a high end scope as a Christmas present to myself so now I am thinking about getting into 50 again.

Yes, it is still chambered for 5 dollar bills.

Thanks for the paperwork link again, I filled it out and will be sending it on Monday after the notary tags it. Just want to be covered in the event when I go to a range and LEO asks for reg, want to have a copy of that with me.
