I need a safe recommendation!!!!

Ok so I need a safe that will last me a lifetime and will be able to hold 20+ rifles handguns, jewelry and important documents. I want something that can be secured to the floor and not easily stolen but, I plan on moving sometime in the next 10 years so I need to have a plan to move it later even if it costs money. Security is the most important thing I'm looking for. Also I would like to be able to have a finger scan as part of the combo. Please advise! Thanks!!

If the safe says it will hold 20 then that really means 10 unless they are all pump action .22s. Always buy bigger then you think you need as well, better to buy once lol.

The real question is, what is your budget?

Like the old saying goes, buying a safe is an investment. Why put $20k worth of guns and other important documents in your life into a $200 safe?


The other concern to consider right now is the availability of a safe, if it's not custom build or ordered. Lots of safe manufacturers and companies have been also bombarded with new orders since the panic started just over a month ago. So unless you find something that somebody has in stock and that you're willing to take, expect a long wait on a custom built one.

My 4-6 week order with Amsec is now gong on it's 9th week. I placed the order back in mid-Nov. No special requests either. Just getting a model from their catalog that wasn't in stock at any local stores. Funny thing is, Amsec's facility is like 20 min away from me too.

Yup. Pistol grips, scopes... pretty much anything that adds bulk or width to your long gun is going to take up 2, maybe 3 spaces in a safe. For me, I like to have some breathable room between my long guns, but I still stack them in there tight.

Also consider that you may want to store ammo, and then paperwork (house, mortgage, bank stuff, certificates, passports, etc), and then maybe some jewelry or cash, and then maybe your expensive electronics if you're gone for an extended period of time (camera, laptop, etc). All of that stuff starts to take up a lot of shelf space quickly, so that's also something to consider.

What is your budget? If money is no concern look into Graffunder and Fort Knox safes. If you want something cheaper checkout Liberty Safe and Rhino Safes (not the Bighorn line, those are cheap imports).

There are quite a few safe manufacturers here in CA. Most of them will allow you to tour their facilities if you set up a time in advance.

Go and take a look at a few.

Remember you'll need to factor in sales tax and shipping/delivery fees, unless you buy it used and pick it up yourself. So with a $2000 grand total budget, you're basically looking at safes no more than $1600, and there are still quite a few good ones out there that will fall within this price range.

However, accessories start to add up as well, like interior lights (LED kit), dehumidifier, door organizer (you can safe a lot of space inside your safe by using one of these as some even hold 2 extra long guns and multiple handguns..... all of that stuff also adds up to maybe another couple hundred bucks or so.

Liberty makes good safes.

The fire rating is a bonus on that one. I personally would avoid anything with a key though, as the key is the weakest point into getting into one. Look into getting one with either a mechanical dial lock, or a pushbutton electronic lock.

Mechanical vs electronic locks are like 9mm vs 45, so I won't get into that here. Use the power of google.

The thing to think about is what is the internal configuration (shelves) that you want.

Usually its a pain to move them around, so it's much easier to order them from the factory the way you want them.

What kind of long guns do you plan to store?

Shotguns with 30" barrels?
ARs with lots of stuff hanging off of them?
Youth single-shot 22lr rifles?

Each type has different needs.

If your guns are too wide (like that AR with stuff hanging off of it) then be aware that safe manufacturers rate a "long gun" as the amount of space needed for a youth 22lr single shot.

If your guns are not too long, then most safes with an upper shelf will work. If your guns are too long (like a 30" shotgun) then you have to make sure you have enough vertical space.

If you have handguns then you want some shelves to set them on. If you only have long guns then you want less shelves to make more room for vertically standing guns.

The fatboy jr you are looking at only has "48" long gun capacity with the shelves removed.
