Yikes. That is why every firearm I pick up is cleared by me, even if someone just showed me it was cleared.

I had a gun shop clerk ask me why I had checked a firearm he had just cleared before he handed it to me. I just smiled and said "can't be too careful!"

Make a habit to check if they are unloaded.

Just walked out of a shop that had a Rem semi-auto rifle on one of the circular floor racks in the common area.

Picked it up and opened the action 1/4 of the way to check if there was no round in the barrel. None in the barrel but a full load mag of 30.06.

I informed the owner and he cleared it.

This at a small gunshop with one clerk and one guy in the back. Imagine if a bad guy got a hold of it and had the drop on both. The one in the back had his back to the front and was on the computer. Both gents were not young.

First thing my dad taught me.

I only keep one thing loaded in the house, but I still check everything whenever I pick it up, just out of habit. (The one that's loaded, I check just to make sure I actually loaded it last time! )

Not Sacramento. I am not going to out the shop. All I'll say is it was in a 'remote' area of California.

I was with some friends the other day, one friend pull a rifle from the case and handed to another friend that started to check it out. After a minute I had to step end and tell them to check if its loaded. Neither one checked it. I was kinda drilling them about not checking, I took the rifle from the one holding it and did a safety check. They all agreed that they should have checked first. We need to teach those around us proper firearm handling.

A couple weeks ago, we were shooting at Angeles crest. As we were leaving the line and walking down the "loading lane" at the back of the firing line, a guy was monkeying with his 1911 at the back bench and sent a round pinging through the fence and out over the parking lot. We were about 10 feet away and walking toward him, moments from crossing through the path of the bullet.

The range guys read him the riot act and kicked him and his three friends off the range for the day, but that would have been little consolation if one of us caught a hardball in the kidney. My buddy carries a blow-out kit, but would not have thought we might need it at Angeles Crest because some clown doesn't know how to clear his own chamber.

It's all fun and games till someone loses an eye... :-)
