Check, double check your unloaded firearms

Make a habit to check if they are unloaded.

Just walked out of a shop that had a Rem semi-auto rifle on one of the circular floor racks in the common area.

Picked it up and opened the action 1/4 of the way to check if there was no round in the barrel. None in the barrel but a full load mag of 30.06.

I informed the owner and he cleared it.

This at a small gunshop with one clerk and one guy in the back. Imagine if a bad guy got a hold of it and had the drop on both. The one in the back had his back to the front and was on the computer. Both gents were not young.

You can't be careful enough.

I alway triple check for a round even if i know its empty I still check better safe than sorry

Yikes. That is why every firearm I pick up is cleared by me, even if someone just showed me it was cleared.

I had a gun shop clerk ask me why I had checked a firearm he had just cleared before he handed it to me. I just smiled and said "can't be too careful!"

Triple, quadruple check, and to me it's still treated like it's loaded

Never assume a firearm is unloaded.

always treat a gun like its loaded and first thing you do when you pick up a firearm is check if its loaded. Ya never came across this but it doesn't surprise me good advice everyone.

Everytime I touch a firearm I double triple chamber check it, and If I know
It's cleared already I still Chamber check it

I usually double check for each individual check in a quadruple check series. So that's...uhh...8 checks. Then, I ask for a witness while I press check. Hopefully that witness is a public notary so I can ask for an official account of my press check. If not, I have to pay round-trip cab fare for said witness so they can accompany me to a courthouse for the notarized copy of my checking.

I kid. Clearing is serious business. A full magazine in a display firearm seems like grounds for termination in a gun shop.

Funny, how the mind and eyes don't always register as to what is really seen. Sometime we do things so routinely our brain expects to "see" something that is or is not there.

Over the years there have been a couple of times I "checked" the chamber and would have sworn the arm was clear. A second check proved me wrong. For the last few years a full rack/lock back/pinky check has been my check system for unloaded arms. Paranoid---maybe,...

When I was in Security Police in The Air Force in the late 60's, an NCO stood at the clearing barrel and when you cleared your rifle, you had to insert your Pinky finger into the chamber, even though no rounds were there, just to make sure...
Even now when i shoot my Garand's, I still do it out of habit, even though visually I can see nothing.
