What to do with ammo boxes?

Received 1000 rounds of ammo today from UPS and I promptly unpacked and dumped them all into an ammo can. My dilemma is what to do with the 50 boxes. Normally cardboard goes in the recycling but when people dig through the bins on garbage night looking for bottles and cans they can make a mess and scatter stuff on the sidewalk. I prefer to be discrete about my gun ownership.

I guess I could dump them somewhere else or am I just being paranoid?

I always leave the ammo in the boxes. I always wondered in you dropped your ammo can if the tip of a bullet would hit a primer hard enough to go bang.

Fold them inside out and toss them in the compost under other stuff. The recycling thieves don't look in them.

Yeah, it's best to be discreet these days. I had to ponder the same thing the other month. I usually just keep ammo in the boxes it came in and then seal the boxes up in an ammo can. But a batch of .22 I recently ordered came in bulk packs that didn't fit neatly into my ammo cans, so I lined the can with a cut-to-size paper bag and dumped the ammo in.

This left me with a bunch of small ammo boxes to break down plus the big cardboard box that it all came in which was clearly labelled "Small Arms Munitions" (with my name and address.)

Solution was to de-label the big box and toss it in a dumpster in a quiet business park. I got rid of the the small boxes by going for a walk in the neighborhood the night before trash day...a few tossed in this can, a few tossed in that can and viola - all gone.

1. when you go to the gun range, take it with you, then you can throw it away over there

2. burn it

3. take it to a local grocery dumpster or park dumpsters.

I just put the small boxes through a paper shredder, and use a knife to de lable the big box.

If you know somebody that reloads, offer the boxes to that person.

Whatever you do with the bulk of them, I'd consider keeping at least one (or perhaps just the panel with the barcode from one) around. I didn't think I'd ever really need any of my ammo boxes, but then awhile back the thing with the Federal American Eagle .45ACP recall came up and I found myself staring at my ammo can full of Federal American Eagle .45ACP mixed in with other rounds, wondering if I would be ok shooting it, or if it was going to make one of my guns blow up on me. As it turned out, I was okay shooting it all, but I was sweating bullets (in addition to shooting them) at times at the range.
