i have a savage bolt 223 and a mini 14 in 223. i only have about 100 rounds of ammo. so i do not shoot 223 right now.
i have 2,000 rounds of 7.62-54r 1,100 rounds of 7.62-39 and 800 rounds of 7.62 NATO and about 2,500 of 22 lr. so we shoot what we have.
sold my Mauser cuzz i only had 200 rounds of 8 MM. these are not good times to need a lot of different ammo.at the very least i would buy something that shoots 22lr and buy a lot of ammo for it.

i do not think of it as panic buying. with you know who calling the shots i think it is prudent to buy a life time supple if you can. it will only go up in price.

I strongly disagree...It's happening, you might not see it, but most of us do! If you think Congress, Senate, Legislators are done, DON'T buy any Ammo! I'd like to know how many AR's have been sold in the last 2 months! Obviously this will surprise you as well.
Yes I took the pic, no I didn't go swimming!

OK, so we should keep panicking because... why? Because maybe some more legislation might be proposed at some point? Should we live in a state of perpetual panic, just because...? I believe in perpetual vigilance, not perpetual panic.

There is a shortage of primers and H335.
There are far more rifles than just the AR-15 that use .223/5.56.

Even if only 1,000 rilfes were sold, and you only sold those customers enough ammo to go to the range once a month to shoot 100 rounds for a year(so only 1,200 rounds total), that is 1.2 million rounds for just those 1,000 rifles.

Now consider that ammo is not produce from the grocery store. It doesn't go bad just sitting around(as long as you keep it clean and dry anyway), so any ammo you buy now, you can shoot 50 years from now. Let's say those 1,000 people who bought one rifle each, wanted enough ammo for say... 10 years. Great, now we've got 12 million rounds needed for only 1,000 rifles.

Now we know full well that more than 1,000 rifles have been sold in the past month. Let's make that number a little more reasonable and say it's only 10,000 nationwide. Well those people still want to shoot the things. So ammo for a year for those 10,000 rifles with short monthly 100 round range trips is 12 million rounds.

100 rounds in a range trip is nothing for a lot of people. Hell, that's not even 4 magazines worth in a free state(if we're talking 30 round mags), and would only be 1 mag dump from a 100 round mag.

Buying 1,000 rounds is not "hoarding". Even buying enough ammo to last a few years is hardly "hoarding".

I agree with all your points. You imply that there was no panic at all, it was all simply the result of rational decisions made by many people at the same time. Maybe you are right.

It still makes little sense though to pay $1+ per 223 round today. 223 ammo isn't going anywhere. It will become more available in the future.

                  Not quite.

People panic bought guns, and happen to need ammo to go with those guns. Because the guns sold, there is every reason to expect the ammo to sell as well.

As far as the idiots paying $1 per round for tula on CTD, those would probably be the new buyers who don't know any better.

Then this thread should actually be about "when will the AR15 panic buying stop?"

Rationally, it should stop. There is no way a ban will pass. Not only will Republicans be against ot, but I bet there are some Democrats who are against it (and who pray/hope silently that the Republicans will turn it down so that they themselves don't have to openly vote against it).

I think we will have a shortage of 223 for a very long time approximately 3 million ARs sold in a Month which consist of just lowers. Sorry which also includes of just lowers.

I think it'll slowly get better. A large majority of folks who bought .223 rifles aren't going to shoot them much.

People horded and that will come to an end.

I've also been told that most of the 5.56 brass/bullets and most of the small primers are being eaten up by a military supple cycle production.

There are also some rumors out here, that there is a ton of PMC ammo on the water that should hit the market in the near future. Not sure it that's true or not.

Gun shops just sold three years worth of AR15 inventory in two months.
