Then your friend is not your friend if he brings mooches to shoot your ammo.
If he doesn't say anything then you should tell him whats up and have them shoot his ammo not yours.

simple as that. If you come off as a prick to them....who cares. Those aren't the type of people you want around anyways.

I set ground rules very early in the game. Anyone who wants to shoot is welcome to do so but they have to buy their own 'ammo, rent their own ears and eyes, etc. If not, they can stand around with the mini-skirt, high heel, summer dress, halter/tube top wearing Facebook chicks standing behind the line and on their phones...

Well.....unless she's hot, single and willing to work it off later! LOL

Problem is, they keep hovering around and interjecting themselves while my friend and I take turns.

Hovering around on the range is as awkward as it is at the bar.

My buddy (doesn't own any guns) texted me and suggested we go on a double date so my girl and I could meet his new squeeze. He wanted to go shooting. He offered to pick up ammo when he was driving past LAX firing range so I told him what to get. After he picked it up he was amazed at how expensive it was but said I'd buy what was left, so I still come out ahead since we all shot his ammo. Hey, I brought the guns, it was the least he could do.

So stop going with them. You're a grown adult(well, I'm assuming you are) and can tell them "no". They're going to keep doing what they're doing, because you keep letting it happen. If this good friend of yours can't stop bringing along the mooches, then tell them to stop or quit going with that person.

You're making this into a far bigger issue than it really is.

I teach safe shooting skills to anybody I know that wants to learn. The cost for the guns, ammo, targets, classroom material is all free to the student. All I ask is that they join the NRA.

I'm just getting input from other gun owners if I'm being unreasonable with my assessment.

I've already talked about it with my loner friend and considering bringing this up with my other good friend who always invites others.

I always ask my friends if they are bringing anyone with them beforehand. If they do then I always recommend that they bring their own ammo to shoot. If they have ammo that will work with my firearms, then maybe I'll let them have a go round.

I'm all for helping others into the sport, with technique and what not. I'm not for them helping me drain my bank account any faster.

I go shooting on a friend of a friend's private property. My friend who knows the guy with the land always brings this one lingerer. He shoots all our guns, never brings ammo, ect. It was ok the first time but then he just kept coming back empty handed. We were starting to get annoyed then he loaded my glock's magazine backwards and tried to chamber a round. I told my buddy I wouldn't shoot with him anymore. havent seen him since.

Im all for letting a new shooter pull the trigger a few times to get the feel of shooting, but I do as Morfeeis does and bring along my .22, letting them shoot a few dozen rounds doesnt break the bank. My more expensive guns to shoot I might only let them squeeze off 1 or 2 rounds, but I tell them it costs money to shoot. I also let them know next time they come out shooting they are expected to bring enough ammo to shoot, and a few for me as well if its going through my firearm.

I always set the tone before shooting with new shooters.

"You are always welcome to shoot with me, and you can always use my firearms. However:
                              1. Your first time out with me I supply the range fees and ammo.
                              2. Your second time out with me you cover your range fees and chip in for ammo.
                              3. Your third time out with me you get to buy your own ammo, pay your range fee, and get to learn how to clean every gun you shoot."

I figure that is fair enough...

I would apply these rules to any acquaintence as well.
"Let criminals out. Let illegals in. Let boys in the girls bathrooms. Condemn police officers. Abort babies. Pervert the children. Condemn Christians. Accept barbarity in the name of Islam. Overtax the hard working people. Coddle the lazy. That's the liberal way." -from a posting on "Yahoo"

I always let guests know ahead of time either to bring your own ammo or you can pay me later and I will tell them how much it cost so there are no misunderstandings. I distribute the boxes of ammos and tell them the price as I hand it to them. Normally the one who does not want to pay up will not show up.
