acquaintances who hover around when you go shooting

How do you guys feel about acquaintances that your friends bring along when you go shooting who hover around as if they are entitled to keep shooting your guns?

I'm not talking about good friends that you go shooting with that you share supplies, ammo, gas, equipment with as they bring something to the table and are your real friends.

Talking about acquaintances that are there who don't bring any guns or ammo and expect to keep taking turns shooting your guns and ammo.

How do you guys feel? Before you call me a cheapskate, I don't mind letting them shooting a couple of rounds but I do start to get annoyed while I'm shooting and they keep hovering around as if they get to shoot when I'm resting. Was it reasonable to say "hey dude, did you bring any of your own ammo? We only brought enough for ourselves and we have to test our new gun and the type of ammo it likes." ?

Man up and ask them to contribute if they want to shoot your guns and ammo. They need to be reminded that there is no such thing as a free lunch.

they shot off a couple of mags (total 30 rds) through my friend's new AR before I pointed it out to my friend.

yea its a generally cheap hobby but when they shot a magazine out of my ar-15 thats like $7 and when they shoot a mag of my m1a thats like $18

I bring what I intend to shoot to the range. If some of my friends newbies want to shoot I have no problem with letting them shoot the ammo that I brought out.

Im all for expansion of our numbers.





However, I put the .45 ACP away after a couple mags and leave the Tula .223 out along with the Bulk .22 if they want to shoot more.

Ruger 10/22. i'll bring an extra brick and let them have at it. the more costly ammo gets put the hell up when i feel as though i've spent enough money being nice.

But then again i dont shoot with people i dont know and wont ask to kick in on ammo.

With .50 cent ammo I wouldnt allow them to. If they go to shoot they need bring ammo or something of value imo.

I dont mind sharing a few mags like at a calgun shoot but thats totaly different to me and everyones pretty much trying out new firearms.

I'd have no problem telling them "I'm glad you've taken an interest in shooting. You're welcome to borrow a gun next time. Here's the (short list) type of ammo you need to pick up. Make sure you get one of those because that's all I allow in my guns." I'd probably also remind them that they already went through 30 rounds, so make sure they bring enough. Most people don't realize how quickly they can go through 100 rnds.

The friend I came with and I only brought our AR15s and ammo to zero sights, rds, and plink.

These acquaintances are not new to firearms, if I brought new people shooting with me to get them into it, I would bring all the ammo and equipment and not expect anything from them.

I used to have a license plate frame on my bot trailer that said "This boat runs on gas, not friendship."

Tell your friends THEY are responsible to provide for the guests they bring along.

I also think that people who dont shoot dont realize how expensive ammo is these days.

I dont really run into this issue though, because generally I just go alone.

So don't go to the range with those people, or have them get their own ammo. The people you have described are mooches. I have a group of people that I go to the range with every now and then, we end up sharing ammo, splitting fees, etc. But I'm not going to just let someone rattle off $100 in ammo just because they're with me.

I used to give everyone that wanted to go shooting with me a shopping list of what they should go buy in regards to ammo, calibers and suggested quantities. I'd invariably get a call with shock on how much the ammo cost. But that way, they understood that going shooting cost money. I would supply all the guns they would need, but they had to feed them, and the food ain't cheap. At that point, they'd start to understand why I bought so much ammo when I could find a good price on it. I'd always tell them that ammo doesn't spoil so it doesn't matter if I sit on it for a couple years before it gets used.

I have two good friends I usually go the range with. One of them likes to bring along lots of other friends and let them shoot his guns and use his ammo. He tells them to BYOB but they never do. My other good friend is more of a loner and does not feel the need to socialize at the range. He is very well off so when others shoot his guns, hes not super anal. It wasn't really a problem until now when its not just the cost of ammo but also the issue of continued supply.
