    Hello, I'm a newbie

    Hi All
I just registered and interested to buy a 1911 semi auto handgun. I did my search and kinda like a Kimber 1911 .45 ACP or Springfield Loaded Champion, and I'm leaning to get the SA.

Which one is better based on:
I'm not gonna conceal it, just for home protection and shooting practice in the firing range.
The gun that my wife can also handle/use it, since she is petite and does not have a big palm.

Also, can anyone tell me how big the recoil difference between the 5" and the 4" ?

The local gun store that I went recommend me to start with the full size (5" barrel) because it's less recoil and slight longer grip, is that true?

Also, if possible I would love to try first before buying them, but unfortunately I have nobody that I know into this sports/hobby near my local area. Any suggestions?

    Thanks in advance.

BUY THEM BOTH... they are both excelletn guns.. The recoil from a 5 to a 4 is not that much of a difference. Keep on posting in this forum and sooner or later you will run into someone that lives in your same area and I am sure that he will be more than happy to take you shooting with him. BTW, welcome to the forum..

Personally from experience I think my full size 1911 have slightly more kick (shooting 230gr bullets) for a petite girl and the grip might be a bit bigger for smaller hands.

I guess you can shoot 200gr bullets out of a 1911 for less recoil but many here will say what's the point especially for home defense.

I presume you're in the SF Bay Area. There's a few indoor range that'll let you rent a full size 1911 (and many other guns) for you to try out at the range (bring 2 people, they usually don't rent guns to lone shooters).

Rent and shoot a few guns with you and your wife and you'll get a good idea on the recoil and how it fit your hands.

Targetmasters and Reed's in the South Bay.
            Bullseye in the North Bay.
            Jackson Arms in SSF.
That's the only ones that I know of off the top of my head where you can rent and play.

Thanks for the advise MrNiceGuy, I'm in East Bay, Walnut Creek/Concord area, so Bullseye is the closest? Good to know that they don't rent to a lone shooter, so I need to bring someone?

Bullseye has gobs of guns. PM soldier415 and see if he has any 1911's there to rent, and yes, bring your wife! Great range, great people. They're located right by San Quentin Penitentiary.

I think the 1911 is great for your wife because the magazine is single stacked (narrowly stacked bullets instead of zigzagged) and the grip therefore is more narrow too. Anyway, good luck deciding. I'd pick either if I had the cash.

Thanks Ironchef, but I don't know him (soldier415), does he work there?

Hehe....I've never met Soldier415 either but judging from his posts here on the forums he comes across as a standup guy.
He works at Bullseye and I'm sure he'd do his best to make you feel welcome at the store/range he works at.

Any yes, Bullseye would be the closest range to Concord (that I know of) that'll rent guns. Bring your wife.

I should have known the Chief would swoop down on that one. If it came to that, I would have Moulton be my stand in...

You see? This is the kinda stuff Dan does. He came in on his day off to handle a lowly firearm transfer me and another guy did. Think I'll come in there and shoot some of them 1911's too! lol jk, can't.
