    Safe Document

I recently bought an AR lower, my first actual gun purchase in 10 years. I went to pick it up the other day and the clerk asked me if I owned a safe. I told him I did and then he went and got me a document to fill out. The form asked for the make and model of the safe and how big it was. Also asked if it had at least 3 locking lugs, the thickness and a few other questions about it.

Is this standard procedure these days ?

My brother purchased a rifle from the same shop a couple of weeks earlier and was never asked to fill out a form like this.

I would have asked the clerk about it, but the shop was absolutely packed and he was very busy with other customers. After he handed me the form, I filled it out and handed it back to another employee who was a young kid and didn't know anything about it.

I have never seen or heard of this. I was asked at one time if I owned a safe, asked for the make and model but was still given that red lock that comes standard with all purchases. Sounds fishy.

if your bother purchased a new rifle it more then likely came with a lock and then no need for safe form.

LGS' are supposed to ask if you have a proper way to secure your guns, either with a trigger/gun lock or a safe/cabinet; there's an affidavit for you to sign as well. Of course, none of my firearm purchases have seen me go through this process so everyone's mileage will vary...

If your long gun does not come with a lock, you will have to either fill out the safe affidavit, purchase a new loc, or show proof of buying a lock within the last 30 days.

Your dealer was doing it right.

As Ron said, in lieu of a lock you can submit an affidavit...

my safe has a UL sticker with make and model on the door of the safe. the frame of the door. i took a pic with my cell phone so i always have it. yes you need to fill out the safe avidavit or buy the cable lock or the rifle or pistol comes with a cable lock. even if you buy a AR lower you need either.
the questions the clerk was asking was not necessary. he might have been trying to see if you were lying.
Been gone too long. It's been 15 to 20 years since i had to shelf my guns. Those early years sucked.

The clerk didn't ask the questions, he was referring to the requirements from the affidavit.

I know the guys who work at gun stores are the greatest guys in the world,
but I decided it's better to just buy the red lock,
instead of giving up information about my safe to anyone.

^^^ This. The make/model of your safe has to be DOJ approved, I think. Those Stackon cabinets are OK so I guess the rules aren't too stringent.

So far nobody's shown up at my house to check.

When I bought my lower, I told them I had a safe, but they made me buy a lock anyways. They said I had to lock it to walk out of the store, but could walk right back in and return it. Store was too busy to deal with the hassle, so I just added the lock to my "gun lock bucket" so that it can never be used again!
