I guess I'm still trying to wrap my head around the idea of a tank commander ordering this fired upon a crowd. I mean, damn, it would make hamburger for 100s of yards.
Soft, massed targets like enemy trucks or light vehicles? I'm presuming that a .40 caliber tungsten carbide pellet, traveling at 4500fps would go through pretty much anything except dedicated armor.

My guess is that dispersion is better with the balls vs the flechettes. The trade space was probably focusing on cost, range and dispersion.

Hmmm. I'm sure someone came up with a "creative" name for that particular trade study. Those guys are always goofing off. Last time I was at a ballistics conference someone slipped in "Long Rods and Big Balls" as their presentation title

Aren't flechettes against the Geneva Convention? If so that's probably why they're aren't being used.
