    Best. Shotgun. Ever.

I'm in absolute awe of this video.
I had thought that the US military gave up on Beehive rounds after Vietnam... but damn.
1150 .40 caliber tungsten pellets launched at 4500 fps, with an effective range of 500 yards.

    Just damn.

And so that shot cup is moving at 4500 fps as well? Delay looks a bit long as well. Something seems off here, maybe 450 fps?

The cameras are automated actually. The ballistics guys know the round's approximate velocity and tune the camera movement accordingly. The really nice ranges use a non-linear motor control to keep the shot in frame and have radar to track the round's behavior.

I had a chance to learn about the round's development. There's an incredible amount of tuning involved to get the dispersion pattern just right. What's really amusing is that during testing, they have to have these massive rolls of witness paper strung out to check impacts. Some poor guys (probably interns or co-ops) have to go out there and circle and measure EVERY impact point on the paper.

I enjoyed some of the comments there.

This is all very nice, but does it have screw-in chokes?

Yup. They are our advanced materials group (formerly cercom/advanced ceramics). We purchased them when we were still United Defense. They do awesome work on ceramic armor and other fun materials.
