Have him take a safety course in guns and get him a .22 rifle. He will have a great time and so will you.

I got a Crickett .22 for my eight year old daughter a few months ago. Signed her up for a safety course, bought some snap caps so she could practice operating the rifle, and now she is a shooter. Here is a pic of her picking it up after the ten day wait, which happened to be election day.

Her stance is much better now.

Thanks for all the tips. I ended up with a Daisy 880s since I could not find a Ruger 10/22. Hopefully there will be more 10/22's in stock once he gets the hang of it. If not I will let him have my old Marlin 60. Also I think I'm better off teaching him gun safety with a bb gun then a .22 for now.Comment

it doesn't matter what you teach them gun safety with, as long as it's a gun. Personally I like starting with a .22 like I did for my kids. They know it's a real gun, it's a real killing machine and it doesn't have the association with a toy that a BB gun does. My siblings and I didn't get BB guns until after we demonstrated proper care/handling/feeding of .22's. Your kids, your call. Just teach them and I think you've done them the biggest service you can do. Respect for life comes so very vividly from an awareness of death.Comment

When I was 8 my grandpa got me a 20 gauge Winchester and gave me a Remington .22 bolt.
My kids are 3 and 5. I'll be taking them out to shoot some AR's, .22lr, and .22 mag's next year. Of course under my supervision and over the last year I've been teaching them safety. They know that if they fail to listen, that they won't be able to learn how to shoot. So far it's been going really well. Had my new Glock 35 out yesterday unloaded and left it on the ottoman. Both boys come up to me and lecture me about leaving a real gun, where it's accessible to kids. I like to test them regularly
