It's important when discussing technical topics to use technical language. This intellectual laziness on both sides of the issue is what's really damaging since it limits effective communication. We laugh at them because they don't know what they're talking about and they laugh at us because they think we sound like hillbillies when we use colloquial language.

This battle won't be won in the streets, it will be won in the courtroom. Judges don't take kindly to colloquialisms. We, as the minority in this state, have to be prepared to defend ourselves legally which requires a proper understanding of and regular use of legal terminology. We may as well get our practice in when it doesn't matter.

          LOFL

It's fairly straight forward a Firearm is a civilian term, a weapon is a Military/LEO term and gunman can denote either though it's most commonly used to denote a bad guy. As for a Gun well that has a rather differant meaning for some of us Didn't ya watch Full Metal Jacket?

to the legal beagles: if my GUN is for personal security, perhaps the lawyers should say it is an 'effective tool of self-preservation' for an 'armed citizen' or something.

this comes up from time to time. It all depends on how you use words as to whether or not you used the words properly.

I like the Magpul AOTTC 2 bloopers reel where the guy introduces himself as a long time ACTIVE SHOOTER... He realizes what he said and everyone starts laughing.

Parsing of words is not the problem

                          LOL. This.

Seriously though, to help our cause I refer to them as firearms. When I talk to another gunner, I refer to it as my weapon.

I got into firearms not as a shooting hobby, but as a variation to my martial arts training. It is really a different form of martial art (with a weapon that shoots projectiles).

Call it a tool if you like. Like a Samurai with his tool, sword, weapon. It is all about context. Most of my context is around combat/defensive training....so....it is a WEAPON.

But...if I sense that you are pussificated....I'll call it a firearm. LOL.

They are designed to kill whether you like it or not. They are weapons.

I own several firearms for the specific purpose of shooting people in self defense if I am ever forced to do so. Therefore, they are weapons. When I practice with them, I am practicing to become more proficient with them as weapons.
