you could do it old school with a stick, a rock and maybe a bow & arrow once you run out of ammo.

    hell our ancestors did!

Improvised black powder rounds would only work in revolvers- all semis would cease to function, or become manual repeaters- not enough pressure.

BP arms foul quickly too (and rust even quicker!)- you'd need a WD40 can to spray it if you plan to fire more than 10-15 shots at a time (past experience with BP revolver).

Have you actually tried it or is this theoretical?

Most * predators* in the wild they say have a 10% success rate on any given day (just keep that in mind).

So you...all by yer'self...only needing to feed just you...... say you're gonna live off rabbits and squirrel.

1 shot gets you one meal.

            Its TEOTWAWKI.........

So, 365 rounds MIGHT get you 365 meals...but that's only ONE meal per day.

So 3 meals a day....365 X 3...again, if you dont miss and you dine alone.

Add in the wife and ONE kid...now you're looking at
            365 days X 3 people X 9 ((NINE)) Shots per day....

THAT is a Helluva LOT of ammo to stock up on for TEOTWAWKI SHTF scenarios....even if all you're talking about is .22lr.........

Those with "5K will be enough" will die if all they have is 5k in .22 and a bad shot-- arguably in less than 5 years ina SHTF scenario if they're trying to feed themselves and 2 loved ones......

Gonna be in a group? Think MUCH MORE.

So you wanna say/argue....Oh, but who lives off hunting alone? Maybe I'll fish...maybe I'll plant stuff..........
................OK....So why arn't you ALSO talking greenery AND Fishing polls
Interesting analysis of the quantity of rounds. Greenery and livestock are in my plan however, assuming I could stay on location. I would be more concerned with keeping people from stealing my crops and livestock than hunting.

Ok, that is kind of what I was thinking. That there would be significantly lower pressure. I was slightly worried though, that the explosive nature of BP would be problematic.

I am well aware of how carosive BP is. I have half a dozen or so BP firearms and usually use actual BP rather than Pyrodex which is less corrosive. There are some things that you can do to varying degrees of success to improve this situation but it is something you would have to deal with. The way I see it, if it is between dealing with corrosiveness and not having ammo, I would rather have the ammo.

well thank you- I try. But this idea of the sustainable greenery and livestock also then beg the question(s) of the much debated-- Saty put OR Bug out....

If you CAN stay put then a lot might be good to go for a while. But as all true SHTF scenarios go-- You MUST plan for the eventuality that you WILL have to bug out---> or it kinda negates the idea of *survivalism* if you're one to argue you'll go down in flames....they can have my gun when they pull it from my cold dead hands mentality. If the purpose is to stay alive then ya' just lost it by saying you'll stay to the death.

To complicate matters-- what if the SHTF scenario is tuely pandemic, either bio, chemical or radiological? Most 'natural' food sources will be...or soon will become tainted. The livestock AND the field become unyielding AND unedible. You are essentially stuck with whatever you have stockpiled....but back to the bug out plan.

Say you DO have to Bug out. Then my anaylsis become alllllllllllllllllllll that much more critical in the ammo you choose to bring with you---> and specifically why to this day many of the diehards still argue the .22LR is the all around most favorable---> and is specifically why *nOoBs* to the survival scene/SHTF mentality laugh over the .22......... as for some the whole SHTF planning is soooooooooooooooooooooooooo multi level and (for lack of a better word) multi-dimensional. You CANT even just say "I've got my .22 and 100K of ammo-- I'll be fine" as it belies allllllllllllllllllllll the other possibilities and what-if's.

Planning for SHTF scenarios is a good thing-- and must be looked at one at a time. But one must always remember to plan for all the other scenarios you DONT want to ever have to face: tha or you're lying to yourself over how well-off & how well prepared you are.

If things get that bad where are you going to get matches from? Stock up on strike anywhere matches?

If things get that bad who will have time or a place to reload?

Just tying to think realisticly here. I think anyones best bet for survival would be to use their weapons to liberate survival supplies from liberal dems who thought no one should own a gun and practiced that policy.

If it got that bad, I think I'd be happy to die and join all my friends/family wherever they went

BTW- Pyrodex is still quite corrosive. Ask me how I know
