    Hunting Wild Pig in CA?

I've heard that the wild boar epidemic which is hurting farmers accross the country has arrived in CA.

Does anyone know where they can be found?

I read some of the farmers trying to charge major $ to try and make money out of someone else fixing THERE problem!.. no thanks!

Most states they are getting culled and left to rot!

    Thanks!

It's not like you read/hear and hunting Pigs here cost $$$ hunts start at roughly $400 and $600 is norm and you can expect to pay as much as $1200. BLM do it yourself is as tough as it gets Probably the hardest animal to find no less get a shot at one.

The same thing that is happening in California is happening in Texas too. Farmers have suffered huge losses, so they figure that capitalizing on pig hunts will offset some of their costs. In the meantime, the pigs breed so quickly, that things will only get worse. Even selling hog permits, they'll never stay ahead of the game, much less even catch up. If they were smart, they'd offer up the chance for anyone to wipe the vermin out for free.

      I don't think it's nice,...you laughing.
You see, my mule don't like people laughing.
He gets the crazy idea you're laughing at him.
Now if you apologize, like I know you're going to,
I might convince him that you really didn't mean it.

In Texas you can kill all the pigs you want and you don't need any tags and hog season is year round. Just don't shoot were your not allowed too.

If they did that here, PETA would be out planting booby traps to kill hunters so that the innocent little piggies weren't hurt because animal life is worth much more than human life.

Remember, we live in the bizarro world of Kalifornia where wrong is right.

There are lots of BLM land and military land open (Hunter Legget comes to mind) that you can hunt, so stop whining.

The Farmers are charging you to hunt their land which is mostly flat, easily hunted and in most cases a good experience. It's their land so who's to complain. They've been doing it for years with pheasant, chucker, turkey and grouse. What's different?

I know a guy who is on contract to the state parks to hunt pigs on Mt. Diablo in CoCo County. The pigs are donated to shelters. The area is loaded with pigs. Nice gig.

Texas has few public lands. About 95% of Texas is privately held property. You need permission if you plan on hunting in Texas, and most of the time, that comes at a cost.

97% of pigs taken in CA are on private property. They are mostly concentrated around Marin county as that is where the farmer imported some russian boars to release for hunting, which in turn have mated with the feral pig population left over from the Spanish. Hunting is year round but you pretty much have to hunt on private property to get one. Keep in mind they are wild hogs and will come at you.

Either you do the private hunt thing (several hundred dollars), or you befriend a farmer/rancher with pigs on his property, or you do your research on BLM land. There are plenty of pigs on public land - it's not like they know where the private land begins and the public one ends. They're smart, but not that smart.

However, they are also mostly nocturnal. In CA you can only hunt them at night if you have a depredation permit (or are authorized by someone holding one), or if they are directly threatening your livestock.

That said, I know people who have shot pigs in daylight and on public land in California. huntercf mentioned Marin, but there are tons of them (and probably way more, IMHO) in Mendocino, Sonoma, Lake, or Yolo counties, just to name my neck of the woods. You just need to know the land, and that takes time. It means getting the maps, and taking long drives and long hikes. This time of year, they leave plenty of tracks that are very easy to spot. Late fall through early spring is a good time to hunt pigs.

You quote me and reply with this! Yes add that cost to a tresspass fee or a guided hunt fee, or try for years to locate and kill one on your own. Good luck!

Back in the '80's in Marin County the farmers used to let people hunt pigs just to get rid of them. I guess that changed? I used to go hiking in Samuel P. Taylor Park and the hogs were really tearing it up.

I don't know how nocturnal they really are

I've seen them out in full daylight in areas where hunting is banned. I think nocturnal habits are in response to hunting pressure.
Henry Coe Park is huge and they are thicker than jackrabbits in that park.
